Mgt thinking passed on to kids

A few of my co- workers and I went to lunch yesterday and we started discussing a few things that were going on with the company. I asked if anyone knew what was going on with the pilot contract negotiation. A lot of people said they were still in talks and that they support they pilots because it will help raise our pay as well. Then there were a few who had the I want mine first attitude and we are the back bone of the company so we need are money. The last person to pipe up just happened to be one of the V.P.’s kids and he was saying that the pilots want too much money so the talks are kind of stuck. I interjected and stated that they took a huge pay cut to help float the company 911, and they should be compensated correctly. He went on to say right now higher seniority pilots are making too much, why they should make more. The funniest part is this kid wants to be a pilot! I guess the attitude to screw pilots runs in the FAMILEY.

It does.

And did this kid attend any higher education?

If so, I'd be willing to bet he "earned" a BA in Finance or Econmics and has goals of getting an MBA in how to screw his choosen profession.

Ask him how many lives his daddy has responsibility for every day, and if he thinks his daddy is overpaid.

So "lives responsible for" is the metric on how well we should be paid?

Per that logic, accountants, lawyers, teachers and many others should be paid $0, because they're responsible for 0 lives/day.

Hate to say it, but airline pilots in the grand scheme of things do not care about the passengers. Yes, in the sense of comfort and things, but these are secondary. They care about operating a safe flight... why? Because if they arrive safe, so do the passengers. Nothing more than the instinctual desire to protect yourself first. I doubt life-saving decisions are made "because Joe Smith is sitting back there"... it's more of a "because I'm toast too" You can argue this point as much as you want, but what I said is simply fact.

You aren't paid what you're worth. Ever. You're paid what you can negotiate. Frankly, the only reason I would care if someone said I were overpaid was if it would impinge upon my ability to further negotiate my pay. "Value" has nothing to do with it. Teachers are more valuable than a lot of other jobs, but pay less. C'est la vie

We should be paid more for many reasons including being away from family, the responsibility of operating a safe flight, etc... But I do agree with you 100% that when the crap starts hitting the fan I'm not thinking "geez Joe Passenger's mom is gonna be upset", I'm thinking I gotta save my ass so I can see my familiy again.

It's kinda like an old saying I heard. Actually, it might have just been something some guy said but, anyway, here ya go:

"My first priority is my own safety. My second priority is the safety of my crew. My third priority is the safety of my airplane. If all three priorities are met then my passengers reap the rewards."

Or, something like that.

Great! I was reading the initial post and Saretsky and Finan kept coming to mind. Google the Airline Industrial Relations Conference and you will see what the rank and file are up against. Take a gander at when they were started and where we as a profession are today.

I saw a news report about a guy who started a business going to peoples yards and picking up their dog poop on a weekly basis. He's making over $100k/yr after expenses.
How many lives is he responsible for? Is he overpaid?

He is actually a pro pilot major.

money is irrelevant to this spoiled brat because likely he has never had to hold a job to pay bills/rent in his life, and has no concept of worth and work.

as also said, im sure daddy will make sure he has the job he wants. :banghead:

:banghead:

No back up huh. . .Well, he'll always have V.P. Daddy to get him a middle manager job in 4 years.

oh really? and a degree in airport operations/airline management is soo much better. What's an IT, history, or management degree after 10 years?

"pro flight" degree isn't the smartest but I'd rather get that degree then be miserable throughout college studying management or logistics.

I agree 100%. What good is that Bachelor's in accounting (or business, etc) you got as a backup when/if the aviation thing falls through and you're competing with guys with Master's degrees? I studied something at first in college that I hated. What happend? I dropped out b/c I was miserable.

I had a 19 year old kid on another site tell me that I should take a paycut so the shareholders of Skywest Inc. can make more money....That is the only time I have ever wanted to jump through my computer screen and rip someone's throat out.

Lemme guess.....Anet?

How freaking typical.

You should scrag this thing before it matures and becomes more difficult to kill. Seriously, all those kids who were desperate and ambitious-in-a-pathetic-way and went to Model UN in high school? They only get worse. Airline CEOs, lawyers, and politicans.

And now for something completely different...

Emu, I'm not sure if you're still in touch with your Kent Island people, but do you know if the Crab Shack is open yet this year? Flying to W29 for seafood is always a fun trip.
