Metformin for pre-diabetes

First, thanks for a great forum. I've learned a lot by lurking. I've been thinking about getting back into flying after a long break and want to make sure I can qualify for a medical.

My question is regarding taking Metformin for pre-diabetes. I've never had fasting levels high enough to be diagnostic for Type II diabetes, but my doctor has me taking Metformin as a preventative measure. My FBG is usually 105-115, A1c 5.5, no side effects. (I actually haven't noticed much difference in the numbers since starting the med.) Is the Special issuance and follow up the same as if I had a diagnosis of Type II?

Thanks for the information and the link. Is the A1c within the previous 30 days referring to the date the primary care physician writes the letter, the AME exam or the FAA receives the request for SI?
