Mayor D of chicago had a tantrum and destroyed it overnight unexpectedly, bulldozing giant Xs into the runways. Unfortunately, this was done without any notification to the FAA, no NOTAMS were out. If there had been any emergency landings or accidents, there could have been some big trouble.

Our beloved Meigs Field was demolished by our (the City of Chicago) arogant dictator-mayor Richard Daley. He has a personal vengance agains all things GA. However, he wanted ORD to be in the city limits so bad (he wanted the revenue) the city was extended out via a small stretch of the Kennedy Expressway to encompass O'Hare.

Please visit Friends of Meigs website, you'll find the answers to all your questions, and you can read about the whole story of the destruction of the 'coolest little airport on the planet'.

Maybe someday we'll see the revitalization of Meigs!

I read an article yesterday in one of those FBO type newspaper things that said that the FAA is starting an informal investigation into whether the City of Chicago broke any Federal regulations by closing Meigs the way it did.

The FAA spokesman said that the WORST thing that will happen to Chicago is that the City (meaning - the fine taxpayers of Chicago) will have to pay a fine of $1000 a day from the point of closure to the day the fine is levied.

But, that's it. He specifically said that Meigs will not reopen as a result of the investigation and that the likelihood of Meigs ever reopening is highly remote.

I got my angry Letter to the Editor published in the Sun-Times in April. The Editorial page folks called me at home and said they were looking for an angry letter to publish, and mine just happened to get there first!

I believe a special place in Hell should be reserved for that SOB Daley. What a jack@$$!

Any chance of seeing this angry letter?

Well, it's no longer on the Sun-Times website, but I can reproduce it here for all those who are interested. As it appeared in the paper April 2, 2003, under the headline "Meigs grab hits city where it hurts":

I am shocked and appalled at the actions taken by Mayor Richard M. Daley in bulldozing the runway at Chicago's Meigs Field airport Sunday night. Within the last year, the mayor had reached agreement with the governor of Illinois to keep the airport open for 25 years, and now he takes a surreptitious action in the dark of night. It seems obvious that the mayor chose this "sneak attack" tactic to avoid the explosion of criticism he had to know would follow this action.

As a pilot, I am deeply saddened by the loss of a true treasure of aviation. Not only was Meigs Field important to aviation in Chicago, it was important to business in Chicago. Untold numbers of tourists, businesspeople, and others passed through Meigs daily to conduct their business and contribute to the Chicago area economy. Now, this unique and valued resource to Chicagoans and people across America has been lost to the selfish, ill-justified actions of Chicago's mayor.

I am a corporate pilot. My company, and many others, have lost a critically important aviation gateway to Chicago -- one that will make it far more difficult to do business in the area. I'm sure my passengers will reminding themselves of that as they endure the lengthy drive downtown from Midway at rush hour.

That was a sad day for GA. I mean how many other airports can you just fly into and be that close to the skyline of a major city like chicago. I mean the planes parked on it didnt even have a chance to move their planes, they had to take off on the taxiways. What a load of horse•. It would be pointless to fine the city because the taxpayers have to pay the fine anyway. The only appropriate punishment would be forcing them to open the airport back up but thats not gonna happen.

OMG! That was you!! I remember reading that letter and saying "Yeah!" A great letter, very spoken!

Meigs always was a special place to me. I decided to go for my PPL after landing at Meigs in a King Air. I took a temp job that blew bigtime b/c the office looked right over the field. I used to love to ride my bike down there and watch the fancy corp. jets come in around the weekends.

It's hard to say who actually benefitted from it's destruction. It's just some underhanded political garbage that this city was founded on. I do know that a company run by a former aide of Daley's got $600k to destroy it, and I'm sure whoever gets the contact to build the park (if it ever gets the funding) will be connected to Daley in some way.

Other than being gone entirely, the saddest thing about losing Meigs is that far too many people actually believed the total BS story about protecting the city from terrorists by shutting the airport down. Disgusting.

And yes, Daley is the little fire-breathing trollzilla in my avatar.

Mayor Daley secretly bulldozed the airport at nighttime without giving anyone any notice!

And he got away with it too; nothing the pilots can do; it's done. Definitely a problem with the system there! He should have been kicked out of office immediately! It was something a dictator would do!
