MEI initial w/DPE and a fed

Ajax

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
We're just about ready to schedule my ride and it looks like I may be doing it with a DPE and a fed. Apparently for the DPE to be able to do CFI add-on rides he needs to give an initial at the FSDO being observed by a fed and I have been "tapped".

I've been told it might be longer and harder, but I was already expecting a very thorough checkride anyways and I'm always up for a challenge. Has anyone experienced this before and can give me a heads up as to what I can expect?

I had to take my first King Air 135 ride with our DO and a Fed. It was pretty much the same amount of material to cover and maneuvers in the aircraft.

I was pretty sure I failed a couple of times but in the end I pulled through. I don't have any specific advice but it sounds like you have a good attitude and you have been studying.

Just make sure you know the aircraft systems inside and out and all of time relevant FAR/AIM material.

I'm sure one of the reasons you were tapped is that you have been doing well so far. Just remember to stay positive.

Anecdotal evidence suggests the failure rate is a lot higher with a fed along, because the examiner is motivated not to appear too easy. A failure is often more easily justified than a pass. The only student I ever had to fail was ME Commercial with a fed along; the fed noticed that the student forgot to advance the props on final and slipped a note to the examiner. The examiner admitted later that he pretty much had to fail the student after that. I think the vast majority of examiners would have just provided a comment in the debrief about it left it at that.

But this examiner was notoriously spineless and the fed didn't have much of a local reputation either. If you have respect for your examiner's character and the fed had a reputation for fairness, then it isn't necessarily a problem.

We had a similar situation, where the student forgot to remove one of the chocks. He realized the problem and shut down the engine to go remove it, and the Fed pretty much did the same thing as your Fed.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll keep you posted. Looks like it's going to be in two weeks. The Seneca just came up from its 100hr, so I get to go flying today for the first time in a while.:rawk:

You'll be fine. A check ride is not a morality test. Even if you fail try to find the positive and talk about that when you have an interview. If your studying you'll do great.
