Medications (offshoot from medicals forum)

Hey all... I should probably know this... but:

Let's say I'm prescribed a medication that is not approved for use while flying... (pending special approval) what happens then?

Am I not flight legal? Or can I just continue flying if I don't take it?

Sidenote: I don't need the medication to be healthy... and no, I don't have trouble with my wood.

Well if your given medication that is not approved, then you shouldn't be flying. Even if you don't think you need it. FAR part 67 spits out all the fun requirements you're supposed to meet. So if you picked up a nasty disease in your nose, but you think it will go away in a couple days, then you should ground yourself.

Thanks for trying SFCC! I appreciate the help, but I'm not sure that it applies in this case...

Perhaps a more clear question to ask is ... who do you talk to FIRST about a medication, your doctor or your AME? Chicken/egg, perhaps, since you won't know you "need" a medication until your doctor tells you?

Do you report it once you come due for the medical, or do you do it as soon as you're on it?

The medication I was prescribed I have not taken, at all, because I went onto leftseat.com and read that it was on the list of "approval required before taking" medicines. So right now, I'm in the gray area of "prescription issued for condition, but not taking so I can fly"... again, I am self-certifying to you that when I am NOT on the medication, I am safe, legal, and healthy to fly, whereas, if I take it, it's on the"prior approval required list".

Perhaps a PM to our flight surgeon on staff right below. He is a pretty helpful guy....

Well I've been bugging him with another medical app question... and I didn't want to take all his time with so many other important forum member questions and life, at hand...

I would think that as long as the condition itself isn't disqualifying, you'd be fine if you don't take the medication and honestly don't need it. Heck, I've been prescribed random medications from doctors before that I never took (one prescribed me some sort of unapproved inhaler stuff for seasonal allergies). Pass. They can prescribe you anything they want...

JMHO.

Does your ops manual address this? Ours state that any non-approved medication must not be used 48 hours prior to duty.

Mine is real silly, and no the ops manual doesn't address it....

might as well just come clean... I was prescribed "propecia" for common male pattern baldness. Like I said, the minute I found out that approval was required, I decided not to take it.:bandit:suppose I can just start wearing my hat.... lol

to be honest, i'd double check with the good doc.

relying on other pilots for medical info is like relying on pilots for financial *hint hint*
