Wondering if anyone has had problems with the PEPC medical or traditional route medical? Anyone failed them and if so would you mind giving the reason for the failure and what happens.....

I have three conditions, high BP, high cholesterol and Hypothyroidism all controlled to normal levels with medication...wondering if Im going to have any problems if I make it to the PEPC.

Thanks!

I failed hearing and vision, but got the hearing waived by the Regional Flight Surgeon and the vision got corrected to 20/20 with contacts. If you fail something at the PEPC, unless it's an automatically disqualifying condition, you get to go see a specialist at home and then send in the paperwork to the Regional Medical office where you attended your PEPC. From there, it's up to the RME to determine whether or not you are eligible.

Here's a link that might help you out.

My husband failed due to high liver enzymes. He had to go through a bunch of tests and then was granted a waiver.

There was a guy in my husband's center that has type 2 diabetes (that is disqualifying item). He too was able to get a waiver just has to do more things to keep his medical than most do.

Hypothyroid is not an issue. They will want to see your blood test results and your doctor will have to fill out a form that states that the condition will not hinder your performance.

high liver enzymes? guess i should quit the frat boy lifestyle till after the pepc

The biggest concern is he has never had a drink of alcohol in his life!!

I also wanted to add..BEFORE you go to the PEPC, go to your doctor. Get information on each of your drugs and where your levels are when you are on and when you are off them. Get any and all information you can on your situation and take it with you to the PEPC. That may help you pass the PEPC evalutation instead of having to go home and do it all!!

teetee, I think Im going to do that if I make it to the PEPC. I see my doc every 2-4 months to stay ontop of my conditions and medications. I see to have problems with the FAA everytime I try to get my yearly airman medical. So I will try to get as much info from my doc as possible before I go.

Thanks everyone else for the info and comments.......I love reading your thoughts and/or experiences....thanks again!

Waivers can be granted. Just go out and try. I have a special waiver for a blood disorder(They call it a "special consideration"). Be advised though, just because they give it to you at first doesn't mean the fight is over.

I had my medical done in Vancouver, WA. When I got to OKC the red flags were thrown up with my current region and I had to go through all the hoops again showing them why I got the special consideration from the other region. It took three days and I was very nervous during that time(luckily I was in basics where the stress wasn't that high).

Side note on alcohol. A history of abuse can be waivered, however lay off the sauce completely. A very close friend of mine here at the center had his medical pulled while upstairs for past occurrences. Laid off it completely and then just before he got it back went out and got a DUI. He is still employed, but not for long. If alcohol has been a problem for you, stay away from it completely or find another career.

Alcohol isn't a problem, I have never been in trouble with the law over alcohol and it does not effect my personal or work relationships, I just don't want to get DQ'd because my liver is producing some weird enzyme :insane:

As long as you don't have a history with any law enforcement or medical issues with it your golden. Trust me, if they checked the livers of most of the controllers at my facility, we'd barely have any controllers left. High stress=lots of alcohol.

I'd have to say I am one of the few in my area that doesn't drink.I don't drink because alcohol just puts me to sleep and/or revisit my food after a very low amount. I can't even drink enough to get a good buzz or feel a hangover the next day(the last being an awesome trait to an otherwise dull effect). So I drink where I'll sleep and only a couple times a year. Makes me popular though if a designated driver is needed, lol.

jeez this isn't basic training, you aren't cut off from the rest of the world. I think most people drop off these boards because they have better things to do than talk about how great its gonna be to be a controller once they actually get to OKC.

I believe swinte said something in a post somewhere about an OKC blog. I don't suspect he'll be off for too long, maybe a week till he gets situated.

Face it dude, you are an addict. So am I.

That and the fact you will be so tired from work, you won't want to talk about it. Add in study time and other stuff, it adds up. I was gone for a long time because I just couldn't get the time to log on day by day and keep up with the threads. I still may disappear from time to time, all depends on when I get my Radar class.

True...

I already wrote a monster post to answer the basic questions about applying for this job, so I probably won't be on here answering much after Tuesday.

But as greg said, I will be attempting to keep up with a blog while I'm in OKC. Something to remember it all by, and something for those who are curious to read about what it's like.

I'm excited, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed for everyone who is waiting on something whether it's medical, security, or selection related.

I have a rare blood disease too (hemoglobin H) and was initially disqualified due to medical condition. I am asking for special issuance as well. Just wanted to ask some advice from your experience.
