MD KC-10 retired too soon?

The KC-46 has a bespoke glass cockpit that looks more like a 787 than any 767.

I think it has an entirely new wing and can transfer 207klbs of fuel, which is 57klbs more than a KC-135R and 47klbs more than a KC-767. Probably the wing box and center tank were redesigned to make that happen.

Probably it exists because the Air Force wanted to both “ruggedize” an aircraft beyond being a matte gray 767-200ER, and to cram-in 50 years of tech evolution. For Boeing’s part, they just declined to sell more KC-767s.

It also has MCAS.

Not necessarily. The KC-767 that Japan and Italy use don’t have the build and QA problems that the KC-46 has, even though the same airframe. Am not sure why this is though.
While not the airframe, I just finished up a trip with a dude that flies these things for our local reserve unit.

He said in addition to the QC issues there’s a bunch of issues with the boom. The USA are the only ones who ordered this model without the traditional boom operator down in the back, but rather with some sort of screen and joystick in the cabin. Also some “recon” hardware issues he didn’t get too in-depth about.

Having done the factory tour in Seattle I hope they took the ‘if it’s not Boeing I’m not going’ monotone female guide quietly into the woods…

Idk if it's the same but the purple 767Fs have a nice glass package but the real bespoke trim is the lav within •ting distance of the Captain's seat. The CRM of intimately knowing what your crew ate prior to the flight without the need to ask is choice 🤠

Japan’s KC-46’s are identical to ours. I think their boom is also operated remotely in their -767’s.

The worst thing about the 767F is having the lav in the flight deck. When I hear courtesy flushes and don’t see the other person come out for a while I just hope they get that door closed quick after they finish. It’s almost like the lav was an afterthought. The second worst is not having a wall to separate the supernumerary seats. It gets to be too much with a full flight of jump seaters.

I don't believe it's the same system. Our 767s have LDS (Large Display System...no association with Utah). It's essentially 787 screens without 787 capability. If you look closely, you'll notice the frame of the screens are gray vs Boeing 90s brown. I believe the KC-46 has a different overhead and the throttles look different.

You forgot having to play musical chairs every time you have more than one jumpseater. I don't care if you were asleep, I have to pee! But hey, you guys got to get an extra can onboard (no dogging you personally, but it IS UPS's design for the 767F!).

Damn, you guys weren't kidding. Although on this one it appears the lav is behind the FO instead.

Looks like the Israeli conversions, the KC-767 MMTT also have the remote boom operator station, as well.
