Always sucks when the first aircraft of a particular model, ends up as junk. Seems to be common practice often. For example, the first MD-90, N901DC, ended up as scrap at KIGM instead of in a museum someplace. Probably wasn't practical to save, but still.

Had some DC-8s scrapped on the ramp next to the hangar where I worked years ago.

Seeing them die was depressing enough, but hearing it ripped your heart out




However, we scored a ton of wire and circuit breakers for our side projects

This strong emotional attachment to the equipment used in our JOBS is a major reason this industry is the way it is. You don't see accountants have emotional attachments to their pencils or ditch diggers attached to their shovels. A plane is a TOOL used to do a JOB. They wear out and need to be replaced periodically.
