May Be Moving To Africa...

Hey guys,

I am in the midst of contemplating a *possible* job offer in Gabon, Africa. I will be working in the finance dept. and after 12 months or less, I will be moved into a FO position on the twotter, followed by the Dash 8. A prof of mine (who used to be COO of an airline) is very good friends with this person who bought out a company in Africa. There are mostly Canadians working with the company, so I will fit in nicely! Also, the person who is *promising* me the flight position within 12 months is very reputable in Canada, and he is known as a man of his word. 2 mentors of mine have worked for him in the past and know him well; they both told me that I can trust him and that he will not brake the promise. The company also has an excellent reputation.

I will keep you updated on this offer. This is a huge step for me; I will not be able to return for christmas, and I will not likely see my family for quite a while. Also, I will be moving from the first world, to the third, where no english is spoken (Gabon is french, and used to be part of france). Since my current job is seasonal and ends in the next few weeks, I think this offer is a good one.

By the way, I have 380 tt, with 30 multi. I am currently doing aerial work. My season ends once the leaves fall of the trees, and it begins again once they grow back (likely sometime in april).

Chris.

Have fun- i lived in some parts of Africa- the amazing thing is that most Westerners love Africa. But watch out for the mosquitos-and DON'T forget your malaria shots!

sure thing-Jon- i will give you call soon-been busy moving into a new place..

-get a lot of shots
-don't drink ANY water that isn't boiled first
-be careful of what you eat- stay away from anything raw, including veggies
-wear shoes all the time
-use a bed net
-don't go into any water that is slow moving or that has snails in it, infact, stay out of the water all together. If you get splashed with some, briskly rub the skin that it hit for 5 mins or more.

ok that's all i can think of right now from my global health class, i will add more as we cover more topics!

That is too harsh! You might be right though in some instances. But the best advise i can give is that make sure you are very familiar to the area, if you go out to the beach and swim! There are various cases of westerners eaten by corocodiles. Trust what the locals tell you the posted signs-please!

regarding the water thing, there is a fun disease called Schistosomiasis that is transmitted simply by being in the water where it is found. It can get into your body through your skin, infact, in water, it is attracted to your skin. Most local people do not know about or understand it, so please do your research before you go. It is really a nasty illness

Moving to Africa is no small move - there are the health aspects, the poverty aspect and totally different culture, but most people who visit come back and rave about it. My best friends mother went to Uganda, she is a typical English country lady, wellington boots, barber jacket, etc but had a fabulous time. My dad used to live in South Africa, and would move back there in a heart beat if the political situation was different. Although it is very different from what I hear it is a great place!!

Ok seriously if you are going to africa check with the state Dept (yes I know your canadian but they'll help ya, just don't tell them) about any immunizations you need. Also, something I carry when I go camping is a water bottle from Eddie Bauer that has a filter in it that makes mud drinkable. It's about $20 with filters costing about 8 bucks each. Let me know what bud spray you are gong to use so I can buy stock in the company.
Other than that have fun take lots and lots of pictures.

Hey Chris goodluck man! You didn't get too bad amount of time at that company there you're working with, as well as your partner Ben! You all are filling in for Brandon well i guess! That'll be awesome if you get in down there, but i hear( i believe from the people who own the airline itself) for political reasons you will never see the captain seat, so that might be something to consider.... as the PIC time matters huge! I'm a flight instructor now at Aero.... at 18 lol.... and im first year at western now in actuarial science! well good stuff man, later!
