? Cruise altitude is the optimal altitude for your weight, temperature, winds, etc. As you burn off fuel sometimes optimal altitude is higher so you climb at that point. But as a rule 4 engine jets are dogs (at high gross weight) compared to 2 engine jets. Definitely true for the 747.

The other day ATC asked what our rate of climb was. We were passing through around 20k or so.

"800 FPM"
"ahhhh, OK, fly heading XXX, vector for climb" (and you can hear the muffled laughter as she's talking)

That was in a CRJ-200. Climbing at 260 knots. Man they suck.
