mad DOG nearly took a dip in the Potomac!

I go to Gravely point often to watch planes. The MD-88/90s always seem to eat up the whole runway and look like they have barely gotten off!

then cut a sharp turn west at about 500 ft or so.

Yeah, we kinda have to do that if we're northbound. There's a pretty white builing with pillars on the front. They really don't like us flying over it. I'm guessing its a noise thing. Stupid NIMBYs. :sarcasm: :D

I think DL and UAL still fly 757s into DCA.

I accually love flying into DCA. I dont mind the dipping and diving ect at all. Yeah I figured the sharp turn was due to national security. I love looking out of the window to see the wingtips close to touching Roslyn.

Try flying into DCA on a fully loaded 757. I dont think DCA even has 757 service anymore if so then its not often. We flew in on National Airlines (RIP) from LAS. The landing was very short and break heavy, everyone in the cabin was holding their breaths. For a minute I was certain we were going to pull a go-around. The take off was pretty scary too, we used up every inch of that runway then cut a sharp turn west at about 500 ft or so.

I saw a few NWA 757's there yesterday. In the past I've seen other airlines with 75's in DCA and I rode home on a USAirways A321.

Believe it or not, a 757 has excellent climb and stopping performance (2 sets of main wheels) so it's a great airplane for DCA.

In the last few months have seen 757s at DCA from America West, United, Northwest, and I think Delta and US. Just yesterday I saw America West's Cardinal painted one. They usually get up pretty quick though.

I will have to wait for another hot day and go out there in the afternoon to watch some MD80s *just* get off the runway and clear the fence. Might make for a good photo.

In fact one of your DL 757 DCA pics. is my desktop pic!

I've never heard of anyone using Reduced Take Off Power (RTOP) at DCA.

I flew into DCA two weeks ago, flew out with a full load of pax, reduced thrust takeoff, and flaps 9 (flaps 18 gives us a shorter takeoff roll). Was no problem at all. Been into DCA plenty of times, and only once did we do a full takeoff thrust departure using flaps 18. I think it was due to a tailwind or something, I don't remember.

Flying out of St. Johns, NFLD one morning we were departing with something like 1200 RVR, winds calm. We started our takeoff roll using our reduced setting, and as I'm beginning to pull back at Vr, the runway end lights come into view through the fog. Needless to say, I rotated a little faster than I normally do that morning. Was quite the sight to see the trees pop out of the fog like that... Lucky there wasn't a caribou on the runway or anything.

Now, MDW, B727, summer time in 100-degree weather. That my friends is a sight to see.

While we are on the topic of long take-off rolls. I have seen quite a few take-offs this summer that made me cringe. Here on the Vineyard we have a 5,500 ft runway. The other day I saw the closest call yet. Lear 35, full with people, a dog and a lot of baggage. PLUS it was topped off with fuel (going to DAL.) Typically those things eat up the runway anyway, but fully loaded it was was quite a sight. On the roll you could see the nose wheel trying to come up and just bouncing a little. It was clear they were trying to get up. Once they did get up, the climb was so shallow that they became quite close to the trees at the end. I remember thinking YIKES! However, I won a $20 bet with another line guy here because he said that particular Lear would be up before taxiway Charlie. Never bet on aviation against an aviation geek!

That's all pretty new stuff then. Remember, I haven't flown in to DCA since 2000.

We DID NOT do RTOP then.

Kingairer maybe you could talk louder instead of cryptically. After all, we all can't be brilliant geniuses like you.

So I was flying out of DCA today to start my trip back to Denver. Well, I have not been on an MD80 in ages so this may be normal but I totally thought we were going to run off the end of the runway and into the river.

We took off to the south sitting in 17A and I was watching the black distance remaining signs go whizzing by, 6 thousand, 5, 4, 3, 2 thousand, thinking we should be lifting off the ground about now... One thousand, there goes the fatties under me and then finally the nose starts to lift off. I swear, it felt like we were in slow motion! Mains are still on the ground and the 500 footers go zipping by. I thought we were toast! I actually let out a little whimper kind of thing as finally the mains got off the ground just as the approach lights show up and then water is right under us...

...I totally thought I was going to be floating around with that stupid seat cushion today. That was easily the most frightened I have ever been in an airplane!

Good luck with that thing Doug! :)

Had a similar experience on a Delta 757 back in 1996. My palm prints are probably still on the seat handle.:D

Ok, I got one... Lufthansa A340-300 (might have been a 200) departing DEN on the shortie 12,000' runway at 103 degrees. Fully loaded/fueled... The 5 APUs had it using up well over 11,000' of the runway. If not for the curvature of the earth it would have had to drive to Germany.

Hahaha...12,000 ft is short? Ya ya I know you guyz have a 16,000 ft. runway. Still funny!

:insane: :)

You could have came back with "haha, 103 is hot?!?"

Whatchu talkin bout it is...103-115 no real diff to me hot is still hot!!!

But what do you Denver peeps know bout hot? The hottest it prolly gets their is 90-95 degrees. And if it does get to 103. I'm sure your 103 is a different type of 103 heat at 5,000+ ft vs. PHX's 1,100 ft.

:D
