Machmeter

Maybe one of the military/ bizjet guys can back me up, but it's basically an ASI that indicates MACH relation... ie. Mach .85.

The intricate part of it is that the speed of sound drops as altitude goes up... so the Mach indicator also gets an altitude input, so it can relate the aircraft speed to the speed of sound at that particular altitude.

Mach meter is connected to an air data computer that considers temp, alt, and indicated airspeed to determine the mach number. A mach meter is typicaly intergrated into an airspeed indicator, the indicated airspeed is fixed and the mach meter moves as conditions change.

Here you can see a mach meter in action...on the ground you can that the mach scale is barely showing, however, once at FL350 the mach scale has come down and even at 240kts we are still going .71.

Yeah, Temp, that's what I forgot! Thanks!

Yeah, yeah, I knew it wouldn't be long before someone pointed that out. I'll bet on your nice new aircraft both altimeters read the same at cruise altitude, but in our aircraft we try to set the right-hand alt. to match whatever the left-hand alt is showing...as you can see I still have to adjust mine a little. RVSM will take care of this little problem however.

Hey, by the way....
What are those funny looking round things that have arms like a clock, and numbers around the edges?????

I must nit-pick...

Mach number and TAS in the atmosphere are related almost entirely by temperature alone.

TAS of Mach 1 = sqrt(401.8 * ((ambient °C)+273.15))

....You candy-ass MFD babies.

About as bad as our candy-ass, ascot-wearing, HUD-babies in fighters....

To be fair, though, guess I can't throw too many stones since I'm going to be dragged kicking and screaming into the MFD/autopilot world in less than 30 days.

May as well dump the AF pilot wings. I'll essentially be an AF Navigator with landing currency.
