so we bored about 2 hours late out of PSC, (Pasco, Washington), As I bored the aircraft, i have my aopa flight training mag april addition in one hand. As i walk one of the pilots i hear, " working on your ratings??" so i turned and said yea my PPL. Hes like hey, come up front and have a seat! I was so shocked, that i said umm isnt that illegal. lol. The pilot said nooooope, and so he let me sit in the left seat, showed me all the controls, and asked about my future, so we chatted a while until it was time to push back, and plus the captain was walking back with his starbucks lol. But yea i was in heaven and just wanted to give a big shout out to " Phil", the allegiant flight 526 from PSC to LAS FO. Sorry im still in shock. lol. anyone else have this awsome experience?

That, my friend, is a textbook example of "paying it forward" in my book. That dude rocks and certainly has some good karma headed towards him now. You never know who you're going to meet when you walk down that jetway.
 
when i get to the airlines hopefully, im going to do that because i want others to feel the way i did. ill never forget it.

Way to go Phil! That's freakin COOL! Way to keep your head and see it as something to look forward to doing later in your career! That's what it's all about, IMO. The happy giddy feeling as if you were still a 7 year old!

I have had a similar experience. Jim, A member here on JC invited me to the hanger where hes the chief on the plane in my avatar. It is probably the most exciting thing you can ever do while starting a flying career, after you sit up there you feel like you could live up there. It makes you want it so bad, and the lights are sooo shiny.

I'll remember to have my AOPA Flight Training out next time I walk a bored. What airplane was it?

I thought you were on Allegiant that made the emergancy landing yesterday!
 
Good stuff. I've had a couple of experiences where we let young pilots come up and take a look during boarding. It's always cool to see their expressions because they are exactly like mine were before I finally worked my way up there. ;)

We've even gone so far as to give the flight plan/release to the father of one boy after we landed.

Never hesitate to ask if you can peek up front. All we can say is "no" or "sure!".
 
I always used to carry little CRJ factoid cards with me in case we had visitors, it was always a pleasure to answer questions from aspiring aviators.
 
Trips to the front before departure are certainly NOT illegal. It's the trips to the front, of unauthroized individuals that'll get you in trouble.

Back in June 2004, I had just flown an Airtran CAK-LGA flight, and decided to say hi to the folks upfront after the flight at LGA. The F/O let me come in and sit in the Captain's seat (the Capt had left, probably to get food).

He pointed out the different systems, and he then told me what to do with the FMS. He had me load a (company canned?) route from LGA back to CAK, which was their next flight. After I followed his instructions to the dot, one of the screens (MFD?) showed a white/light-purplish-type line coming from LGA and heading westward (all the way to CAK, I assume). Then, the F/O said that was pretty much all we could do until we actually got the dispatch forms. I thanked him, and left. He came out and gave me a business card to stay in touch.


Talk about a good flight and a great crew!

That's great about the crew letting you up front. We were in BOS heading up to Quebec City and a 17 PPL came up and asked us if he could see the cockpit. My Captain went way beyond that call and had this kid sit in his seat and explained about damn near everything about the CRJ in limited time. When that kid left he had the biggest grin on his face. Pay it forward guys/gals.
 
i believe it was an md 83, its the smaller one outta their fleet. still goin crazy lol.

Aye, I've had one of those.

I always try to pop my head in and say 'wuddup' as I board.

It was a United a320 and I peeked in and said hello. I told em it was my first time aboard a 'bus and the captain (old geezer) got up out of his seat and offered it to me... Sweet. I started asking about bleed air and everything and you know what? He let me fire up the APU so I could look at all the numbers and the systems and everything. Sweeeet.

I was up there for about 5 minutes just shootin' the sheet with the guys. Totally cool!

I plan on being the same way if I'm ever in his position.
 
Best one I have is from the 70s. Got into the 747 cockpit during flight with my Dad when they had engine issues over the Pacific and they called him (via a stew) to the cockpit. We was a mechanic for the airline, BTW. That was back in the days it was a lounge upstairs so my dad just told me to come with him. No passengers saw me go into the cockpit.

It was a big event for me, although they didnt talk to me. They were troubleshooting the engine with my Dad. It was also the days of FE's.
 
Yeah those experiences are awsome. I was flying to New Zealand 2 years ago and our first flight was from Charlotte to Los Angeles. And I politely asked the flight attendant to ask the captain if I could take a look up front because I was an aspiring pilot. Sure enough he let me sit in the Captains seat and powered up all the electronics and showed me how to operate all the systems. It was truely awsome. I believe it was a 757.
