Lost my log book!

So I moved back in December, and I think that one of my friends helping me move, tossed my flight bag in the dumpster. I can't find it. It had lots of things in it, including my log book. Which had about 200 hours recorded, and my paper PPL license. So yeah... that's how long ago I got my PPL, back before they started giving them out as a plastic license.

Any advice on what I can do? Am I'm totally screwed?
 
This happened to me when my parents renovated the house and they threw everything in my old room away, including my logbook.
I did the following;

get records from my flight school where I did everything through my multi/cfi

get records from the 3 schools I flew at as a CFI.

I recreated my logbook in an excel spreadsheet as closely as possible. I honestly probably lost 50 - 100 hours of single engine time, taking friends/parents etc flying, but I have no way to prove I did it so I just omitted it. '

Lastly make the switch to electronic.

Wish that I could do that. But my flight school closed back in 2003, and took $5k of my money for my IFR, that they insisted that I put the whole amount down to secure my training. About maybe three weeks later, the doors were bolted, and a sign put on the front door. Bastards.

So yeah... I'm totally screwed, right?
 
You can request a replacement certificate, also your 8710 from your last Checkride is a record of flight time. Was the private pilot certificate your last one, or did you do your instrument rating too?
The FAA has a copy of all of your 8710s in your complete airman file.
FAA form: AC 8060-68 is the form to request the file.

Sorry to hear about your stuff getting thrown out.
 
I haven't experienced this, but I believe in previous threads on the subject, it's been suggested that your medical application/8710 can be used as evidence.
 
I lost my 3 logbooks in 2013. Not a big deal. You can request your 8710 form from the FAA that had your hours when you took the check ride. Other than that you can write in what you believe you had, which is no different from writing in what you had before. Both instances its word of honor. Makes no difference.
 
Ah, I just saw your response to the other post. We're you attending a 141 school? If so did you manage to get ahold of your training folder for any flights you did toward your IR?
If so that can be used to show flight time.
Other than that maybe check with any and all places you e rented from over the years to see if they still have records of any flight time you put on the aircraft, and payment info.

I know it's frustrating, but it's worth it to scratch anything you can get your hands on and use that supporting info to start a new logbook and get the flight time you can reclaim certified as a point to move forward from.

No it was part 61 school. And the morning I showed up at 10am, and the doors were locked, was going to be the first day of my IFR training. But I'll def do the 8710.
 
Man, that sucks about the school stealing your money.
Also, as pointed out before your claimed flight time on each FAA medical that you've done is also a record and that along with any 8710s, written test reports, accident/incident,and enforcement action info will be included if you check all the boxes on that FAA form for your complete pilot records.

On the bright side this will make a good TMAAT story some day!

Definitely make an electronic log, as previously stated.

Start the new book by stating your previous hours to the best of your knowledge. If you plan to use it to apply for a job I have heard of guys who have lost theirs, you just have to say what happened and it seems to be a non event.

It's a bummer losing all the memories though!!
 
  • All my logbook including aircraft logbooks are kept in a fireproof gun safe.
  • Loose your aircraft logbooks and reduce the value of your aircraft by as much as 50%
  • I never carry my personal logbook(s) in a flight bag or my car unless they are needed for that day.
  • Have a backup of your logbooks on your computer. (Which is backed up off site with Mozy)
 
Man Max, that's pretty crappy. Do you have any of your previous medical applications?

You'll have to go down to the local FSDO and sort it out. Are you planning on switching careers?
 
This recently happened to me as well. I was able to contact all the flight schools and friends I had flown with and recreate everything except the hood time needed for my instrument, and that might still be obtainable also.

As far as the safe route, make sure it's bolted down. Mine wasn't (house was a rental) and the thieves that burglarized my place and stole my two logbooks made off with the entire safe as well.
 
My logbook, license, medical, passport and ATP written results were stolen from my house 2 months ago. I have started recreating my logbook from my last 8710 at Flight Safety when I did my LR-JET type. What a pain in the ass! Thank god for that documentation and electronic logs from my last job. I lost probably 500+ hrs in that logbook.

This is the biggest loss of it all. All the flights and notes.....it feels like part of your life has been lost.

Pilots license ? you mean we have to have one to fly.........................................oooooooooooooooooooooops!
 
My logbook was stolen from my car last year. Not the end of the world (I keep an electronic backup/let the computer do the math). Whatever hours you listed on your last medical/8710 should be fine with the FAA. Just start a new logbook, and carry forward the hours you had as best as you can.

Mine had a lot of sentimental value, still pissed that someone took it.

THAT! Some how my flight bag ended up in a Citation headed to South Carolina the night I was going to really go through my logbooks and fix any errors before applying to Ameriflight.

It was going to be easily rebuildable, but that really was the first thought; losing all the notes about flying with weird students, aerial survey shanigans, flying with friends, 80 dollar hamburgers, emergencies, the first crazy ass month at Flight Express, ect... I thankfully and luckily got them back about a month later. I feel for you guys that really have lost them for good. It sucks :(

My plan was:

training records
company flightlog(in the case with UND and Flight Express)
rental receipts from FBOs I flew out of

Actually had just about every single hour accounted for within about 20 minutes.
