Losing it, need help

Hey guys, currently i have about 45 hours towards my ppl. I am only a couple of flights away from my checkride. I am also a Senior in high school (17) with lots of things to do. Aviation has been my passion for as long as I can remember, but now it feels like I have just lost the desire. I havent flown in about a month, have had problems with the flying school, and scheduling problems. It just seems to have become a chore now rather than a passion. Any words of wisdom out there to help, anything, I mean anything would be great. Thanks a lot!!

I think you should put off the "work" flying until you're not so busy anymore. Once done with school, take the early part of this summer to fnish up the PPL. You already meet the total time requirement. Once you have it done I think you will enjoy the flying again; I know I did. You're not worried about PTS standards, requirements, etc. Just take some friends up and don't kill yourself.

The more rapidly you can get through the rest of the rating, the better. A month between lessons is really dragging it out!

I would finish of your PPL even if it feels like a chore - if you get your PPL it will not expire. So even if you do not fly for the next 5 years, you will just have to go up with an instructor till you are safe, rather then retrain again, which traditionally is like starting from the begining.

If your really close and feel you can do it get it over with. If not then don't force it. No one wants to bust a private checkride!

Been there, done that. I'd address the root of the problems, then give it a shot. I got so stressed at my first flight school I didn't fly for over a month, then found a cousin who is a CFI to finish me up, two states away. I'd agree to finish it up though, and as you get closer to being done it will feel great.

It sounds like you're just getting frustrated with all the hassles that you've been dealing with. You mentioned problems with the flight school, scheduling problems, and so on.

You've hit a rough spot right now, so it's only natural to feel frustrated and annoyed. I would say just go out and fly for fun, just do a little sightseeing, and so on. Don't worry about anything but having fun flying.

See if that doesn't do the trick for you.

Don't quit now....Regret is a hard pill to swallow. I say that because sometimes you just need some encouragement. So get your private you might want to use it someday. Your young have fun..... As for Passion....it comes and goes....you have to live with aviation, during the good and bad times, that requires dedication. Stay dedicated.

DON'T QUIT!!! I felt the same way at times. It seemed we were training so hard that ALL of the fun had been squeezed out of the experience. However, the feeling of passing that checkride on the first try was PRICELESS!!! Once you have that out of the way, and actually fly for the FUN of it, you will feel much better about the all the hard work you had to put in.

Keep on, Keepin' on!

J.

Flying is a demanding thing. If you plan to pursue a career in aviation, doing it while you are young is the best thing that you can do for yourself. If this is something that you care about, you need to find the time. You may have certain memories from high school that are important, but all of the memories that you have of flying will stay with you for the rest of your life

Hang in there!!!! You can do it!! If you've gotten this far along, there really isn't any reason to quit. What you're probably experiencing is the same thing that most people experience when they undertake a large project. The initial fun has worn off. Yeah, it's still fun, but now there's alot of work that goes along with it. You're prepping for a checkride, studying, etc. HANG IN THERE!!!

This is that hump that you have to get over!! If you get down and need a little motivation, just remember this !!!!!

Hey AA, stick with it!

I know it can get tough when things start working against instead of with you, but you are so close. You'll cherish checkride day and getting that temporary airman's certificate the rest of your life - as well as the first time you take passengers up.

I'm 9 hours from finishing my commercial and have been witnessing the slow demise of the fleet at my flight school - culminating in the upcoming loss of 'my' Arrow this weekend. So now I have to go to the other flight school on the field and check out in an Arrow II and hope I can get used to it in 9 hours or otherwise shortly thereafter - I've been flying all this time in a t-tail Arrow IV and was finally feeling 'at one' with it.

Stuff happens, but sit back and think about if you really want it. Where do you really want to end up? If your answer is as a pilot, get to moving and it will get better.

AA,
I think most pilots for the way you do. I think it's human nature as you get nearer to the test, because you are studying hard and maybe getting a little anxious. A little bit of anxiety is perfectly normal and will actually help you to do your best. Set a goal to get the checkride done within a specific timeframe and go for it. You'll be fine. Good luck!

Hey Sarah (sbe),
I've just started my Commercial training in a T-Tail Arrow IV. I have 2.8 hours in it so far, and just got my complex endorsement. How many hours do you have in the plane?

Dazzler - not to hijack the thread, but I've got 22 hours and change in the Arrow IV. It took me a while to get in sync with the plane, but by the end of that stretch I was really starting to feel comfortable in it. I'm transitioning over to a '76 Arrow II to try to wind up my last 9 hours of my commercial. Hopefully I can get comfortable in it in the time left, or at least not a ton more than that. This couldn't have happened to me at a more inopportune time!

Thanks a lot guys for all of the inspiration, it really did help. I am set up to fly on Saturday, and the weather is supposed to be nice. By the way, SBE, I like the picture. Airplane pictures are a great inspiration!!

Thanks AA. I took that while getting to ride along right seat on a trip in a Citation CJ1 last fall. Talk about inspiration!

Best of luck!

Sarah

Hello,

Cheer up...you've got lots of time ahead of you to make it happen! Alot of us wish we had been able to be ready for our check rides when we were 17. It may cost a little more, but maybe you should wait to finish up & take your checkride once school is out for the Summer. I can't even imagine trying to go to school full-time, carry a good GPA and learn to fly at a reasonable pace. Hope this helps!

By the was, what airport & flight school do you use?

Thanks,

JR

Hey, im soon becoming a student pilot soon but heres my two cents since I know what your going through since im in HS as well. Take your time, try to at least get together with your instructor once a month for a hour if thats all you can do so you can at least get up a little, maybe get a solo flight once or twice if you can, take the checkride and than you dont have to worry about it, you will have the permit/license and you can fly whenever you get the chance. Good Luck!

Yeah cheer up buddy...from most of everyone I know it is perfectly normal. And you have PLENTY of time. I did this when I began my instrument. I felt like I had just became such a good pp, and then all of a sudden I was dumbfounded again!

Just worked my way through it.
