Talk to me about redirects. I had "life" happen and my first choice on my geo-prefs over a year and a half ago do not coincide with what's good for my life now. I currently have a TOL for ZDC (and scheduled for OKC in FY2011 ) , and being in this area is not going to work for me any more.

How can I get a redirect? When I talked to my HR rep about a redirect in March, she said" the ATO is not entertaining any redirects" (direct quote). I have a family-card I can play as a last chance opportunity, although I don't know how far that will get me. How did you guys get a redirect? Is it easy to do a facility trade? Should I try and do a redirect before I go to OKC or should I wait until I am actually in to get a trade?

Any insight/advice you can give me would be great!

I tried twice, also with family as a reason. Wasn't happening.

Generally speaking, for a redirect to go through for a new hire, the ATM of both facilities need to agree to it. It's not enough that a place has room for you and is willing to take you, ZDC needs to agree to let you go. The first time, there wasn't room where I wanted to go; the second time, my facility wouldn't release me.

Whether HR has the option to override that in an exceptional case, I don't know, but I wouldn't count on it. What they told you has been the official line for a few months now.

allow me to be blunt, the FFA dosent care about you or your family problems so dont even try that one, your just a number and if you dont take this slot they will just pick the next number. now that being said the only option you MAY have is to take the slot get to OKC and HOPE that someone in your class will swap with you.they MIGHT due a one for one trade because a trainee is a trainee and they are all usless untill they check out and can produce.

Honestly, you're in a situation where you either take it or leave it. Sorry for being so blunt.

I hate to agree with queeno, but he's right. You're worthless to them until you check out at your facility.

On another note, if you get to your facility and check out, you will be able to transfer to somewhere else from there.

Swapping in OKC is possible. When you find out your date try to get on all the boards and look for someone willing to swap. Their may be someone in your same situation. Where are you looking to end up?

That's a big MIGHT. We had three Cali folks that wanted to do a swap among their three facilities, and they weren't allowed to do it, even when we were still in the first week of Basics.

Nope, do be sorry y'all, this is all really good information I need to hear. I have no freakin' clue what I am up against. At any rate, I'm trying to get back to my home town - but I'll take home state at this point - Florida.

I had a friend do a redirect back in early 2009. He was originally selected for Las Vegas Tower and somehow found out Scottsdale Tower was hiring in Arizona. I believe he contacted the ATO and asked if he could have the position in Scottsdale instead. He works there now. My advice to you would be to do a little research and see what you can find out. If you know there's a facility that's in particular need, you may want to ask for that. The worst they can say is no and you'll still have your position at ZDC. That's the best advice I can give ya...sorry if it doesn't help.

It is possible, but difficult.

I hired on at ZJX and eventually ended up where I wanted. I did everything I could while at the academy, but they wouldn't do anything. I went to ZJX, did the classroom thing for about 3 months and then the ATM's both agreed on a swap. It was pretty much dumb luck. Depending on how much you want the redirect and how much you want this job, I would suggest sticking it out and trying to work something out once you've got your foot in the door.

On a side note, there were 2 from my basics class that wanted to do a facility swap. They brought it up during our first week of basics, and were given the run around for a few months. They both had to do a lot of legwork to make it happen, but eventually they ended up where they wanted to go.

Good luck, anything is possible you just have to talk to the right people. After you become a CPC it doesn't seem like it gets any easier either. We've got a few that are trying to transfer out, and they have to be released and picked up. It can take 1 to 2 years after you make the request to end up where you wanna be.
