Title says it all. Thought I'd look here before going to the online malls. Had a very, very close call today with a CAP 182 that overtook me- I heard his engine before I saw his left wingtip go by in the same direction just under my right wingtip.

Would that scanner only include "participating" aircraft? as in altitude reporting aircraft.

Yes, the Zaon queries the transponder of the other aircraft and gives you the information.

Scary stuff, Blackhawk! Glad you made it back safely!

One question: how the hell would a 182 that close to you NOT see you??? Way to go CAP, you almost became your own SAR case!

Do you know if both versions query the transponder? Radar can be iffy here so I don't want to rely on ATC radar.
I think the CAP airplane was doing instrument training. So you had the left seat pilot wearing foggles climbing while we were slowing and descending. No way I could have seen him as he was behind and below me. We were both converging on KDMN for the VOR approach. We were making announcements on CTAF, but he was not. When I called him on CTAF and told him we were so close I heard his engine he responded "See and avoid". I responded "Rules of the road. You were overtaking me so you needed to see me and avoid me."

I misspoke the first time. The Zaon receives the replies of the transponders of aircraft being queried. Although it is a passive system, it detects transponders being queried by both ground based radar and airborne TCAS. It is a really good system for the price.

In the case of the CAP plane, I would have called the head of that CAP unit and explain to him/her that their pilot tried to kill me and was a complete ass about it.

Odds are it was the head honcho himself.

Funny, I was almost killed by a CAP 182 in DMN as well. I can vouch for the Zaon, not too expensive and helps you keep your scan going-$400 well spent for me. BTW, If he had told me to "see and avoid" when he was the one not making radio calls and overtaking, I would have pulled him out of his 182 and kicked his ass right in front of the FBO....
