Long time no see.

Pay had not improved at the regionals. In fact, it has gone down (over all). That said, there is more movement now than there was then (and, minus another international level crisis there will continue to be movement), so your chances of moving up to a better schedule and higher than reserve pay are better now.

That said, I don't think it's changed enough that if it wasn't something you felt good with the first time you'll feel ok this time.

And good to see you posting again.

That is unfortunate. If I remember correctly you were with PSA? Is that still the case?

I have students that are Captains at regionals and charter outfits now. It's damn near depressing but I just can't afford to make less than $40K. Plus now I haven't done much flying since late 2009 when I was at Grand Canyon last. Things would have been different had I been a single guy without kids that is for sure. Oh well, guess I will wait a few more years and hold my breath for that pending pilot shortage. LOL.

Welcome back man! A lot has changed, some folks have moved on to major airline gigs while others upgraded at the regionals.

Thanks. I may hang around a little bit more. I am going to start doing a little more CFI crap on the side when I have time. Realizing that I haven't flown much in 3 years has got me motivated to get after it again. At least do a little on the side and stay current.

I don't mean to be pessimistic and dash your dreams, but starting wages at a regional will never get you to 40k. You might get close if you bust your ass and somehow manage to fly a 1000 hours in a year but a) on reserve that's not very likely, and be, it will still be short of 40k.

I haven't been around in forever. Have things improved since 2010? I'd like to fly again, minus the part where I grab ankle and be thankful for $18K a year. I'm making good money owning and driving a truck but I hate it. Anyways, good to see you all again.

Sounds familiar, I let my nose get out of joint over 3 years ago and like you, bought a big truck.
The money is good, bought a Cherokee last year and after an extensive (10 years no flights)
annual, got it out last week.
Derailing at almost 60 is different than you, but you're having a family commitment limits some openings.
If you get to East Tx gimmee a shout, we can burn some 100LL.

Good to see you again. You always impressed me with your posts related to flight instructing. Hopefully you'll stick around.

I just got a dedicated run from Dallas to So Cal to Charlotte and back to Dallas for Black and Decker. What part of East Texas?

I'm off I 20 near Longview.
Actually at the Casa Grande Petro today for LA friday 0600.
I will put my truck in next week for
in-frame and if my oil leak is corrected on the 140, it'sgo, go,
go!
After that, I have to drive to Mexia, Tx where my bud is
supposed get students.

Right along my route. I will keep in touch, I start that route in a couple weeks and will let you know when I am around your area. For now I am taking some time off.

I hopefully will not be needing a rebuild anytime soon. I am at just over 800K and still doesn't burn a drop of oil. I have a C-15 and its been pretty good to me so far.

"For now I am taking some time off"

I bet it happens all the time- not just me!
I'm off work right now, been a year or more,
somewhere else it's 5 pm, we see contrails above us in the distant sky and don't see epaulets in the mirror- that's when we think,.....

Welcome back! I was a long-time lurker and had just joined the forums as a member, but I remember you posting before your hiatus.

Welcome back. Honestly, I would buy a Cessna 140 or Decathlon and fly a few times a month, if I were you. I am sure driving a truck and flying for a living have about the same minuses.

In the end you will need to save some money and take a hit in pay for a year if you want to go to the airlines. The pilot shortage wont really be hitting the majors. They will surely be running new hire classes quite often, but their pilot pool will never dry up.

That was heavily laced with sarcasm, the whole pilot shortage thing. I already did the regional gig for a short time. My rent and expenses exceeded my paycheck and I didn't have enough in reserve to last the two years I needed. That is life.
