Hello,

I am going to be starting training and wanted to look into getting a logbook for the computer this way down the road when I need to show some one my log book I can print it out and be nice and neat. Any Ideas witch one to look at? Also would it help to get it for the my PDA? Thanks

Logbook Pro. Kind of expensive at $100, but I highly recommend it. You can enter up to 50 lines in a fully functional demo version.

It's a good thing to start early; makes data entry easier. But until the FAA gives the word on what forms of verification might be needed for electronic logbook records to meet the "in a manner acceptable to the Administrator" requirement, paper logs will also be around. (Lest you think I'm an anti-tech Luddite, I've been using an e-log for a while - my first was written in pre-Windows95 DOS) .

LogBook Pro does a good job if you want to start with a pay-for (it's not what I use - but I probably would if my home-grown one didn't fit my needs so nicely). For a start, you might consider one of the free online logs. IMO the most important features of one are (a) that the data is in a universal format so you could transfer it to another program and (b) you can save the data to your computer so if the site goes away you don't lose what you did.

One of the popular ones around this board is http://flightlogg.in which meets both tests.

I would just start an excel spreadsheet. Make up the column titles based on a paper logbook. Assuming you have access to Excel it's free. Also, down the road, when you feel you need the added features of something like Logbook Pro you can import your spreadsheet.

Free is good.

I use logbook pro, personally. I went with it because I could use APDL and the logbook pro for Palm program's on my Treo. All I need to do after every flight is toss the data into my Palm and sync the thing with me computer while I'm I n windows and shizam! Everything is in logbook pro.

The problem will come when I dump the Treo at some point and get a G phone. I sure do hope the logbook pro guys are working on ports for other mobile operating systems at this point.

It is my understanding that the LogbookPro guys are slow to grasp new technology.

Also, they charge too much.

Same here. If you've got a phone that supports Palm OS or (gack) Windows Mobile, you're good. If it's an iPhone, you're outta luck with LBP. LogTen Pro, from what I hear, is a good, comparable product for the iPhone, though.

It's not that they're slow to grasp technology, it's that they don't like Macs. :) One of the things holding me back from getting an iPhone (other than the mandatory, overpriced data package) is switching over to LogTen. It's a PITA to sync it with something other than a Mac.

Some food for thought. I use an excel spreadsheet that I found free on the internet. It keeps track of all of my hours and catergories that I need and I have a summary page. As for the FAA I also have a logbook that I use specifically for instruction and checkrides in the event they wanted to look. All is entered into the spreadsheet.
