Local Freight Question

Hi,

Im still a little ways off from being qualified, but I have been looking into freight jobs and like the idea that you can be home a lot. I just wanted to know if anybody knew of anything that has a domicile in the Long Isalnd/NYC area. Also if I take the freigt route and eventually want to pursure the majors, is it harder than If I start with a regional? Ultimately I think I want to be with UPS or Fedex, but from what I hear that is kind of like hitting the lotto. But from what I have read, your best chances are to have heavy jet and international time, which I think you need to be in the majors for. So Im thinking about freight, then majors then Big freight (In a perfect world). I understand eventually I will be away from home with these other jobs, but if I can stay local to New York for the first few years with a local freight job, that would be great too.
 
I know not every freight job is home a lot, but I was reading up on airnet and flight express and both blogs said there was a lot of home at night and vacation time. I looked up flight express and they dont have any domiciles around here. I cant find anything on airnet, but I think I looked them up a while ago and they didnt have any local domiciles.
 
You don't have to go to a major. Atlas, polar, gemini, southern, they all fly 747 and md11 and trust me, they go international, like round the world trip global.
 
I currently fly for Airnet out of Teterboro. We currently have 8-9 other pilots based out of here. Historically, TEB is a very easy base to hold so it might be a great way to start out. Good luck.

Thats cool. Ill look into them. Do you know if they tend to be like a 6 day on/ 6 day off type of deal. How are payscales?

Thanks Lgj. Teterboro isn't too bad. Looks like its not that far over the river. Im in Long Island. Im hoping to find something at either Mcarthur or Republic, but if there isn't anything their Teterboro isn't too bad if I can avoid rush hours.

Thats funny. Yeah I just learned how to do the quote thing. (although it really isnt rocket science, I just figured it out) Maybe I went overboard. Plus I started this thread and have made 90% of the comments. So Ill sit back if anybody wants to jump in. That would be cool too. (Someone else commenting.)

Yea they work pretty hard but they make good money!

which run are you holding for airnet? I see your planes everyday. matter of fact, I work out of that same hangar for Jet Aviation. nice to see a 'local'. Trying to score a job at AirNet as soon as I finish training. Been hearing that TEB is the base that no one wants because of the cost of living in the area, thankfully, I'm local, possibly a little to local.

Hey "DD" - I'm not sure I qualify as a local, but I have a nice living arrangement and I really enjoy the flying I do out of Teterboro. What's your current deal; are you at the Aeronautics school or training someplace else?

I am flying USC145. If you are really interested in flying for Airnet, please go to http://www.airnet.com, educate yourself, and then contact pilot recruitement to express interest in a flying position. If you show a positive attitude and a continued interest it will probably go a long way in your favor. JC is also a great resource. Good luck to you.

I am going to be training at CDW with Century Air. I work in the GSE dept for Jet Aviation. I know the ramp guys do a number on some of your planes. Thankfully MidCoast is right there to fix them. How long was the Lear that had is gear struck out of commission?

Thanks for the information. I read alot about AirNet everywhere, and was going to contact recruitment once I started Comm training.

Dude, you guys came down yesterday to cover the Caravan because of the fog. You should've seen the fit that the jet lead ramper in his golf cart threw when there were extra Airnet planes on the ramp. Whine, whine, whine. He said we were soo lucky that there wasn't anything going on at Jet at 1:30am. That's what over 50k a month in rent at Teterboro buys you. Kenny told him if he didn't like it to close his eyes, and it would all be over in two minutes.

There's a lot else. 50% of the time you call for fuel you get it; you have to search 15 minutes for your plane, and it's always blocked in. Fuelers never clamp the static line to the plane when pumping gas. You can't ever post-flight because Jet drags your airplane away in the morning with you sitting in it. I could go on further but I would just start to get pee-oed so I'm going to stop the rant.

I want to slightly alter my earlier statement, I really enjoy the flying I do out of Teterboro except for the Jet employees that I have interacted with. Sorry Double-D, but they've earned it.
