Re: LLoyd\'s check ride

Thank you all for your support!!!

Got up to BWG today at about 11:30 for a quick last flight with my instructor. we flew, did a complete mock checkride, and then I just kinda hung out and shot the breeze with Sean and my Skymaster-chick (BTW, the Skymaster was delivered today. . .SWEET!!!).

The examiner came in from his other checkride, and then we dove right into the oral. We caught up on gossip, talked about other people that we knew and he showed me his new IPOD mini . . .

After about an hour of BS, he talked to me very seriously about being an MEI, and all of the hazards that come with the job. We talked about the Twin Comanche, and about how much fun he'd had in it, and we talked in great detail about the performance quirks of that aircraft (although the ride was in a Seminole, he knows that I'll be doing some training in a Twin Comanche, and being a friend, he's coaching me along in that area).

We hit a few systems questions on the Seminole, talked alot about VMC and then we headed out for the plane!!

After complete preflight in the rain, we jumped in and started up. Taxied over to Runway 12, and I "taught" him how we do the run-up, explained the feathering and governor checks, and ran through a good pre-takeoff briefing.

Started with a short-field takeoff, and landing. Did well on those ( I'm pretty snazzy at Short-field landings....

), then did a normal landing. After that, we heading off into the murk!! It was a cloudy, rainy afternoon, scattered at about 1100, overcast at about 5000, and lots of rain and "muck" in between! We did steep turns with no horizon (always a good time), and headed directly into a power-off stall. He didn't like that I added power, raised the gear (since my hand was already there) and then got the flaps. He wanted me to add power, raise the flaps, and then get the gear. Hmmmm . . .ok. It's his show!! I'm not completely sure how I feel about that, but I'm still new to this game and completely open to learning!!

Anyhoo, we did a drag demo, VMC demo, power-on stall, simulated engine failure on takeoff, emergency decent, then back into the pattern! Did a couple more landings, including a single-engine landing. He then showed me some smoother ways to fly the twin in the pattern (gave me the speech about not being in a single anymore, etc).

Did a full stop, and that was the end of the ride! He even taxied the plane in so that we could resume the gossip about other folks!!

Re: LLoyd\'s check ride

Man, Lloyd with all these things you keep completing, I gonna have to bring more money to Vegas to keep buying you beers. Congrats! Now your all done until???? That TT has to be creeping up there. Getting the resume sharpened up?

Re: LLoyd\'s check ride

Kick butt Lloyd!

You are an inspiration to all us dragging our butt instuctors (me...) to get off of our butts and schedule our CFII checkrides!

Congrats man!

Re: LLoyd\'s check ride

Thanks alot, Grabo!

I'm inspired by all of US here on JC! It's like a gathering of the best of the best! Everybody here gives off this positive energy, and I think we all feed off of each other!!

All of your kind words mean alot to me!

I'm with you on that one, Lloyd; the gear is purely drag, the flaps contribute to lift. When cleaning up, why eliminate some of your lift before you've gotten rid of all possible drag? I remember a bud of mine telling me that the AF teaches its folks it's always "gear, flaps", in that order, whenever interacting with both. That was awhile ago so I may have it wrong, but it makes sense to me.

I've always been taught that the first notch of flaps is the highest drag item in the multi (didn't you do a drag check? you should know which is the biggest drag item)

Re: LLoyd\'s check ride

I was taught the opposite, that the first notch of flaps is mostly additional lift.

Re: LLoyd\'s check ride

Congrats Man!

I guess that flight from west Texas/Arizona must have helped build that 15hr PIC you needed. Man, it took me forever and then some to build that PIC time for my MEI ride.

My ride went pretty much the same as yours only it got a little tricky towards the end when my examiner did a simulated engine failure on downwind, but all and all it was pretty much the same, weather and all. You got to love those steep turns with no horizon!

Congrats again Man. You are truly on your way.

Re: LLoyd\'s check ride

flaps, gear, flaps

bring the flaps to 10 degrees, then bring the gear up, then bring the last notch of flaps, at least that was the way i was taught.

First of all, Congrats!!

The way the examiner told you about stall recovery is how I, and the school I instruct for teaches power-off stalls.

There are a few reason I believe he wanted you to do this.

a) Power-off stalls are meant to simulate coming in for landing and not adding power while trying to extend the glide to the runway. The reason stays down, just in case you hit the runway. The gear will absorb some of the force or shock from hitting the ground in a stalled condition.

b) Lets think about SE performance too. Roughly, the gear down is -250 fpm. Gear down and flaps 40° is -525 fpm. So we can infer that Flaps 40° gear up is -275 fpm. If you believe this, then flaps are more drag than gear down. I know this is a power-off stall for both engines operating, but it is good reference to know the drag penalties of the flaps and gear.

Again, congrats!!

Lloyd the DE is correct.

Stall
Set max Power
Flaps 7 (assuming flaps are at 20)
Pos Rate
Gear Up
Vfl
Flaps up
Climb power climb checks

That is the way we do it in the Saab in 121 ops...

Re: LLoyd\'s check ride

Nice job Lloyd, I see your moving right along. Great job. Your gonna be sitting right seat somewhere real quick with the progression your making. Just save some of that energy for Vegas baby!
