I'm working on my PPL, and had a few questions about talking to ATC. I sometimes get "mic fright" if there is such a thing.
Yes there is! But you get used to it quickly, then it's fun to talk on the mic!
If someone could tell me what I am supposed to say when ATC says the following, that would be extremely helpful.
"....taxi to runway 36 via Charlie 3 and Charlie."
How do I read back the directions properly?
"cessna123 taxiing to rwy 36 via charlie3 and charlie." is perfect because it includes the assigned runway along with the taxi instructions.
(Granted, you can put your callsign in front or back of your transmission.)
*(Make sure to read back all "hold short ___" instructions verbatim.)
+Required+ A pilot's readback of the ASSIGNED RUNWAY is required by ATC.
3-7-2. TAXI AND GROUND MOVEMENT OPERATIONS
[...] When a taxi clearance to a runway is issued to an aircraft, confirm the aircraft has the correct runway assignment.
NOTE-
1. A pilot's read back of taxi instructions with the runway assignment can be considered confirmation of runway assignment.
"....turn base at your discretion."
Do I have to tell them when I turn base?
No. This phrase is sometimes used to indicate that a previous restriction is no longer applied, such as "i'll call your base turn/leg."
The decision as to when to turn is in your hands.
When requestion permission to take off, so I have to tell the tower that I am doing touch-and-go's or do they already know from my ground clearance?
(OMDAHL Said it best...)
This varies with each airport. Some airports advise (in the ATIS) that all vfr a/c contact clearance del, prior to taxi, so the local (tower) controller has a heads up as to where you are going after takeoff.
If this is the case, contact clearance and advise the controller of your intended route upon departure, such as "skylane123 with atis bravo request right closed traffic rwy 26."
Clearance may then just say "skylane123 contact ground on (freq.)" and that's it.
If there's nothing in a published notice or it's not on the atis or anything, like most smaller class D airports, then just advise the tower controller of your requested departure, "skylane123 holding short rwy 26, right closed traffic."
For vfr flight following, i suggest you advise clnc of your request, or at least the gnd controller.
Thanks to anyone who can give me a hand.
No prob! :hiya:
