Light Business Jets

Homewrecker
I have thought about this question for a little bit and would like to know everyones opinion.....With the introduction of light business jets (Eclipse 500, etc.) do you think companies would pony up some extra cash and pay their pilots a better salary (since they are saving quite a bit of money over buying any other business jet), or do you think they would keep going on with their cost-cutting and keep them where they are?

Peace!

Nope! My guess is they'll pay pilots the same, and just pocket the savings. If I was a businessman, I'd probably do just that myself.

If the company is too cheap to buy a "real" jet, why would they pay their pilots well?

For the most part, nope. The excs getting flown around will continue to goose their bonuses but the folks who actually do the work flying them around? Hell no!

They'll say they have a fiduciary duty to make sure that they keep costs in line for their shareholders -- all while conveniently giving themselves multi-million dollar pats on the back.

My thinking was (I know, I know, I'm not using corporate executive logic here) is that you are only spending 1 million as opposed to 5 million-ish, so there will be plenty of money to pay the pilots more while also still maintaining a significant savings. Stupid me

I think the vast majority of these light business jets will be used in fractional and charter arrangements. In cases like that it could get to be more lucrative, since the crews are more productive than the typical corporate crew. You already have one fractional operator with unionized crews. I'm somewhat impressed with what their BBJ pilots make.

There may be a whole new business model of on-demand charters coming with the lite-jets. At least the pilots could make tips, like a cab-driver. How yoo doiin!

The company I fly for (on-demand) has a deposit in for an Eclipse jet. Not sure why...the King Air only flies 50 hrs. a month, and the new Lear is still just sitting there waiting for a crew. It'll be neat if I'm still there when they get one though.

That is exactly what will happen where I work. No doubt about it. I never realized 135 charter was such a cut-throat business.

And how exactly do you define a real jet??

They will probably pay the pilots less. Most pay scales are based on aircraft size.....and they know that.
