Life Insurance

I've taken on a couple more students recently, which exponentially increases the odds of one of them trying to kill me

I figure it's time to get some life insurance. Any recommendations? I let my AOPA membership expire the year before last, but I thought about renewing to take advantage of their discount on insurance, or possibly joining NAFI as I believe they offer member discounts as well.

The first question to ask when thinking about buying life insurance is who depends on you financially. If the answer is nobody, that greatly decreases the need to buy insurance. In that case you would have to be betting that you are going to become uninsurable in the future and also gain someone who is financially dependant upon you.

The next question to think about is how likely are you to die. As a flight instructor, I wouldn't put a lot of weight on that one. How likely you are to be in an event that dings a propeller is another question, but when you think about the kind of accidents that kill you, being a flight instructor doesn't seem all that high risk. When you balance that against the rate-up you get to cover you while flying, it seems pretty steep for what you get in return. Now, if you are flying night 135 in an airplane where you always take duct tape along just in case, well, that is a different story.

Got mine through Pilot Insurance Center. Flight instructors usually pay a premium, but they have a group policy now (started for crop dusters) with good rates that will take flight instructors with no premium for being an instructor.

Ask for Seth. He was really easy to work with.
