LHR closed due to substation fire

Lucky for the guys who made it to Gatwick, but wow. Certainly looks like a warzone from the initial Daily Mail pictures published. What a mess.

LGW and MAN are both filled up on diversions. Some northern European airports are basically at capacity as well. Going to be a long few days to get things recovered from this.

Another Russian sabotage event, I'm excited for the 70 page thread where certain users deny that Russia are the bad guys.

Can you post a source for that? The latest I’m seeing hasn’t suggested a cause yet.

The primary transformer and the backup, located miles apart from one another, caught fire, or "exploded" as described by local residents - at the same time. Of course electricity travels fast and things can happen, but given the ridiculous number of infrastructure sabotage events in Europe in the last two years that have been tracked to Russia I don't think it's far fetched to connect the dots.

I hadn’t heard about the secondary. If proven true that does start to look suspicious, although crazy stuff can happen when electricity finds a ground

Royal Police are saying that while counter terror is investigating, foul play isn't expected.

A BA A380 did an LGW-LHR a little bit ago and not another transponder was on at the whole airport still around 1700L. Wild.

It blows my mind that something like this could happen, both major (ish) airports that I worked at in the US had on-site generation and the (ish) airport had 2 separate hookups to commercial power. I assume the major one did as well.

Is Russia behind Heathrow Airport closure?

Counter terrorism police are now leading the probe into an electrical substation fire that has shut London Heathrow Airport for the whole of today amid claims it could be a Russian sabotage attack linked to Vladimir Putin's campaign of disruption.

More than 1,300 flights to and from the UK's busiest airport will be impacted today due to its closure following a blaze at the nearby North Hyde electrical substation.

Thousands of homes were left without power with more than 100 people evacuated after a transformer at the substation caught fire as a huge explosion was heard.

I remember being junior manned into a 16 hour shift while working as a gate agent for the Eskimo in Seattle when the power went out in the terminal. Only it was wonky in that only the concourses lost power, the main terminal still had power. So while I sat in the dark at gate D2 with a broken Salmon (the 734 one) not going to Anchorage the TSA 50ft in front of me had lights and power to their machines.

Felt so bad for the people stuck in the dark on the N Satellite train that night.
