LGA 13 DP

I normally start that turn at 400 per our standard procedures. We can turn at 400 in VMC and 1000 in IMC unless there is a good reason to otherwise (such as departing NW out of DCA.

Just curious, why is there that initial turn to the right after departure from rumway 13? They seems to be a slight right turn, then usually a ledt turn. All these years driving on the Whitestone Expressway, I always wondered.

Unless otherwise stated in the departure...initiate the turn at 400'. The FAR obstacle analysis assumes no turns below 400.

Trust me, not many people at the airline level even know this. 400' or higher if explained in the procedure or your Ops Specs.

They emphasize this big time at Delta. The departure priorities are 1) airline specific procedure, 2) SID or Radar Vectors, 3) IFR Departure Procedure (Obst dept), or if none of the above, 4) Straight out or on course above 400'.

If you fail to follow these priorities you'll bust the checkride.

The one I see people getting lazy on is the IFR Departure Procedure on the back of the Airport Diagram. If you are not given a SID or a Radar Vector...you are required to fly the procedure in IMC or VMC.

This is not true for Part 91. Part 91 gives the pilot the latitude of flying the procedure or not...whether VMC or IMC.

Now there are some local procedures that may require a turn below 400'...such as an engine out at DCA departing to the north. It's possible that you will need to turn at 200' AGL to avoid the White House. This will be covered in the IFR Dep Procedure and obstacle clearance protection afforded accordingly. In a transport jet...you'll just want to watch your maneuvering speed and ensure that you don't bank over 15 degrees until above V2 + 15 kts.
