Let me address something....

There's a forum topic in collegiate aviation that went sour... Doug probably didn't do anything about it because it was a valid forum for discussion...

now - let me point out that many people use abbreviations or slang (myself included) when posting on this website or working on the computer - there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. When it comes to sending out resumes or professional documents, THAT'S when it makes a difference.

Flaming is one thing...but - when it comes to cussing (ie: aviationfreak - you were almost banned for that), there is no excuse. To say you want more professionalism with "spelling" is one thing - to show it by using cuss words is totally inappropriate and UNPROFESSIONAL. and i am very disappointed...

If you want professional - you (as an individual) have to BE and SHOW professional.

Tanveer was banned earlier this evening. Since he was not the start of the problem(s), I have unbanned him... he explained that he understood his spelling was bad and why he used abbreviations, that should have been the end of that discussion (to each their own)... I understood everything he said because as i said earlier, i do the same thing...it's just another type of shorthand. I'd recommend that everyone use longhand typing but if they don't - it really shouldn't be of THAT much concern as to go and flame someone as bad as it got....

if Tanveer or anyone else continues to abuse the board... there will be a serious talking to and if that doesn't fix it...
mad.gif

there were many users that contributed to the continuation of that particular discussion turning sour . I (we) do not want to see that happen again.

The purpose of the board is to help others with whatever questions or problems (spelling included) they have... keep that in mind for the future.

let me point out - we are not a.net, cussing only bring the whole discussion down... if you want to get your point across - don't do it with nasty words cuz it never helps the discussion... use your verbal insite to get your point across without the nastiness...
wink.gif

I appreciate those who did attempt to answer tanveer's question. If you'd like to continue that discussion on a modest level, the topic is still open.. unless we see more inappropriateness "go down"

I am sorry for my actions and I know they were wrong. I just got hot headed and started to type without thinking which is VERY stupid. I will make sure that it doesn't happen in the future.

well, i and i'm sure everyone else appreciates your effort!! :)

I just want to make it clear that if we keep tanveer banned - we'd also have to ban all the other users who contributed... it's not right to say that our "regular posters" have any more validity than a new person when it comes to flaming...

that's my point.

Once again I missed all the fun, but in reading the thread, I have two observations:

1. EatSleepFly and Ready2Fly must be AWFULLY bored lately. Grammar/spelling flames? What is this, Usenet, circa 1992? ESF, I'm sure you have some Bonanza systems stuff you could be studying instead of getting into a pissing contest with the kidz. And R2F, you disappoint me, brotha. Seriously guys, take up porn or something.

2. tanveer and aviationfreak--you guys are obviously young and reacted badly to the taunts of your "elders". You need to learn to recognize when someone's pushing your buttons and try not to react so predictably. Don't let others' behavior determine yours.

Peace!

Sheesh, everyone stop trying to burn down my website between flights!

This is something important to remember, the same guy you piss on today, may be the guy you're asking for a job tomorrow.

As the former assistant chief pilot at Skyway that tried to fire me over some bullsh*t back in 1997 that I saw again while a brand new Delta pilot:

"Yeah, sure I'll forward your resume" (riiip).

Everyone take a peek, right now, at airliners.net and flightinfo.com. That's what this forum can degenerate into. People start taking off, traffic goes down, advertisers balk and the next thing you know, the website doesn't justify the extraordinarily high expense of paying for dedicated servers and bandwidth.

We've all built a good thing here, don't phuck it up.

While I have not been a long time user of JC, it is none the less disconcerning to see users who have nothing better to do then talk down to other users or insult those who they disagree with in some way, shape or form. While I missed out on all the action, I must say I am in the least not surprised this took place on here. While its easy to interpet someones post in a different meaning then the original poster intended I find it even more disconcerning that these actions are not limited to users, but also some of the moderators.

I know sometimes peoples reactions to a post are nothing more then a knee-jerk response, however my hope is that you those users and moderators will think about the how they come across before the post and show a little more professionalism.

me too.

My apologies to Doug, Kristie, and Tanveer.

"This is something important to remember, the same guy you piss on today, may be the guy you're asking for a job tomorrow."

That ain't no crap. As nice I guy as I am....I once lost a job based on a bad recommendation from a previous employer. It was totally unfair and I should have sued the bastard...hehe...but aviation really is a small world and losing that job cost me a twin time position. Instead of flying 402's, I got to spot fish is a Cessna 150. I figure that one bad recommendation set my back two years.

Many people have said you shouldn't form opinions based on the way people act on line and what folks say on line. Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned or need to learn to relax, but I'll tell ya I DO form opinions about people based what they say here and I have a LONG memory.

If you want my respect....and I'm not saying you should....you need to treat folks here in a respectful manner.

Trust me...this is a pretty cool place. I don't even go to a.net anymore and hardly ever post at flightinfo just because of the flames and the attitude. I think anyone who comes here and causes trouble should be terminated swiftly and with extreme prejudice. (that's a movie quote)

I would like to post a reply to tanveers original post but the thread won't let me.

This is a strange thread for me to pick to make my debut post, but...whatever, it's a weird world. I have been a lurker here on this and several other forums for about a year now, quietly trying to gain enough knowledge about this career path to make some important decisions by shutting up and LISTENING. I've never had to ask anything, because someone somewhere already posted about it.

My point, and I do have one, is that this, above all others is the finest resource I have found (aviationinterviews.com is also good). FlightInfo and others also have information, but you have to sift through all the trash talk and other garbage that riddles them. Quite honestly, my first thoughts reading that trash was "Why would I ever want to go into an industry where I'll have to share enclosed space with jerks (bein real nice there) like this? I must be nuts." I realize, however, that they are a minority. (God help me if they're not).

Ok, some would say, fine, go away, more for me. That's not the point. The point is that people who call themselves professionals and then go off like a 3yr old who didn't get his cookie really do a fine job of tarnishing everyone else's image. That's why I love coming here, and I would like to say a great big thank you to Doug (and Mrs. Jetcareers

), both for having the site and moderating it adroitly.

Thanks, and have a good one.

Disclaimer: I didn't even read the posts in question, so nothing in this post, not even the cookie thing, is to be taken as a personal attack/criticism of any individual. I am speaking in general terms.

Aloft, what ARE you talking about? I didn't start out intending to flame him. I started out joking. It was only after he got nasty and disrespectful that I quit joking around. You have no idea what I have going on in my life, so please don't make assumptions that I'm "AWFULLY bored." That kid was just trying to wind everyone up (it worked). I have no problem with some slang and a few spelling errors (I'm sure I'm guilty of it myself), but when its completely intentional and it gets to the point when you can't even comprehend it? Thats just rediculous. PM me if you'd like to continue making assumptions about what I do with my spare time. By the way...all those posts were there long before I got the Bonanza gig.
tongue.gif

Personally, I think he should stay banned- but thats not my call. He instigated all of the negative responses that he got by being competely rude, disrespectful, and using his own spelling of cuss words.

Doug is right...Airliners.net surely sucks (damn simmers) in my opinion and I've never been to flightinfo.com. I would hate to see us drop down to that level...

I am really not sure why we are babying posters like this, he asked for advice, he was asked to word it somewhat coherently and he lashed out. I understand that Doug and Kristie want to avoid the degradation of the JC forums but I think posts like these, all written by the party in question are exactly what is degrading the forums. I take the time to type, and proofread, even spellcheck most of my posts, so I dont see why WE are being scolded for advising a poster to do the same as a courtesy. Here are some of the highlights of Tanveers posts...I really am not sure why he was even given a second chance..

So apparently, spelling the cussing so that the censors don't pick it up doesn't count?

I honestly don't get it, nor do I apologize for one single thing that I said in that thread- in fact, I still stand by every word of it. If that is grounds for me being banned, so be it.

Stop trying to justify your actions and just apologize and get on with the next thread. Even though you may just be explaining your side of the story, that still doesn't dismiss the fact that there was behavior JC doesn't tolerate.
P.S. - This is a good situation to address since I think we were all guilty of this in some form or another.

"But Mommmmm! He started it!!" Yup, that's what this whole thing kind of sounds like. If someone is irritating you and using slang or poor english or being a jerk, why not just refuse to grace him with a reply instead of getting into a pissing, er, typing match over it?

I agree. I preview every post before I submit. It's a feature of the forums that more people should take advantage of.

And that's part of my bit about professionalism. If you want people to take you seriously, then take the time to present yourself seriously.

Well, look at it this way, he has burned most of his bridges here, so while he isn't banned, I think (IMHO) he will hardly be welcome...

This is probably the most important thing. At some point, I am pretty sure that many of our paths will cross, especially with aviation being a small community and getting smaller all the time.

When I was in college, I said a lot of stupid things and burnt bridges that I have now spent years unsuccessfully trying to mend. It only takes a second to destroy a relationship, so think before you post.

There's plenty of blame to go around. Let's learn from this and move on.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. I'm, 15, I deal with it at school all the time; kids using vulgar language towards me, and my teachers, to other people, thinking if they use choice words it might get them somewhere... I do not even reply to it, makes them twice as mad, because then, they do not have a single bit to reply to.
