Yep, with only a PPL and about 50 hours under my belt, I have been hired on in the left seat of a 777!

Of course this 777 is made by Caterpillar instead of Boeing, but gotta start somewhere! Best summer job ever! :rawk:

congrats on the new job , this must be an interesting one ! i would not mind driving one of those in manhattan :yup: lol
How is pay ?

Nice! I've heard that the guys in Canada in the Oil Sands can make bank driving those things.... where are you working?

Pay is hourly, but my schedule has me working 60 hours a week, followed by 50, then a 30. Then the cycle repeats. We haul coal, rock, dirt, or whatever else needs to be moved in Southern Indiana coal mines. Drives like a pick-up; its just the size of a house.

Nice rig. So you mention that this is a summer gig? I'm assuming that your not an IUOE operator. I hope that you didn't cross an operators picket in the coal mines around edwardsport.

No, I'm not a scab. I am doing this over summer break before I head back to college. It's a Peabody mine, so no strikes to speak of......

Well taking the job of a skilled tradesman is just as bad as crossing a picket in my mind, but hey what ever floats your boat.

Does the same logic apply to an electricians apprentice? As long as there are union electrical workers any non union apprentice working for a self employed electrician is the same as a scab?

Im just trying to get this all straight whether it be universal or if it only applies to heavy equipment operators.

that is awesome. I always wanted to drive one of those. Do you have to have any special endorsements on license?

It depends, if the electricians apprentice is a member of IBEW than no, if the apprentice is non-union than yes they would be taking a job away from a skilled tradesman. I didn't make the rules that's just how the construction industry works. Most people don't realize that union tradesmen are highly skilled & educated, they spend years in trade school to learn their craft.

Yes, that is true in the Chicago area and east. When you go west of the Mississippi then unions are pretty much not existent.

For me it is not about the pay. I have no desire to do long haul. But with the truck I can go get dirty everyday, and be home at night.:bandit:

No, the dump truck pays more! ;)

Hell, I think the garbage collector in Scottsdale rocks about 80 G's. And I say, good for him!

d00d! That's, like, 20,000 pesos a week!

That's not sustainable (the distance from a median income)... not as long as there's a majority portion of the economy that's based in consumer spending and there's a disconnect between price and value
