Landing Gear Vlo discussion

Did a Seminole checkout with an ATP rated pilot with 10,000 hours the other day. In reviewing the V-speeds, we discussed Vlo speeds. Vlo extend - below 140, Vlo retratct - below 109. Somehow, someway this guy didnt seem to understand that Vlo retract means you cant retract the gear above that speed. He was 100% positive, you had to be above the published Vlo retract speed to bring it up.

Odd.

Wouldn't be much of a climb rate off of the runway if you had to accelerate to 110 (with the gear out) just to suck the thing up.

Sigh....

FAR 1.2:

==============================
VLO means maximum landing gear operating speed.
==============================

FAR 25.1515 - certification rules for trasnport-category aircreft (no different for the others):

==============================
§ 25.1515 Landing gear speeds.
(a) The established landing gear operating speed or speeds, VLO, may not exceed the speed at which it is safe both to extend and to retract the landing gear, as determined under § 25.729 or by flight characteristics. If the extension speed is not the same as the retraction speed, the two speeds must be designated as VLO(EXT) and VLO(RET), respectively.

Give that ATP a quarter and tell him to use it to buy a clue.
