Kudos to Coast Guard pilots

I was on the ferry the other day when some older person went into shock, so they had a Coast Guard helicopter come in from Sitka. Wow, that was cool to see. Since they are unable to land on the boat they have to hover and lower a basket. Those guys are good, luckily for them the weather was nice, but those are some good pilots.

You have to admit, flying any sort of aircraft, fixed-wing or rotary, would be a pretty sweet gig. Actually, I've thought that puttering around in a Dauphin plucking up stranded seamen would be cooler than flying around one of their Hercs or something.

They've got all my respect, though ... it can be a very dangerous job and they do it in all types of weather.
 
I really, really, really wish I wasn't too old to switch to the CG. Sigh.

"You have to go out, you don't have to come back"
 
My brother in law flies the Dauphin/Dolphin out of Miami....great gig and he loves it..he has to "deploy" to the Keys every so often for a few days. It sucks i know...I have seriously considered that route many times..take a look at their aircraft list...awesome stuff, KC-130's, Citations, Dauphins, Jayhawks...and the list goes on..and they are sharp looking unlike typical military primer gray
 
Awesome to see fellow Coasties in action. When I was active duty at a small boat station, we used to do boat ops with the helo's for practice in situations like the one above. I used to spend hours a day underneath those helo's tending the basket. The pilots do a fantastic job and I had the privelage of riding along with them once. The focus and slight, smooth control touches they use are amazing.

I miss the Coast Guard, trying to get back with the reserves now while flight instructing. The Jayhawk is an awesome helicopter, I've only had the chance to work with the HH-65A.
 
I've been seriously thinking about the Coast Gaurd for awhile now, talked to a recruiter and he told me to come back about 6 months before I graduate. It's like a ten year commitment though!
 
It is not a ten year commitment...enlisted is still 4 like every other branch and if you want to be an officer you can potentially get a 6 year and if you want to be an officer in aviation than i believe you sign up for 4 years as soon as you get your wings, on top of however many years you already have...usually 2

Really, thanks for the info. I had heard that to go to officer canidate school and than flight training was a ten year commitment. Guess I'll have to research some more.
