KROC area?

Well, I thought KRDU but we will be moving instead to the KROC area next summer. Anyone have ideas on the flight activity up there? Places to live? (She'll be at the University hospital, where ever that is).
I assume the climate is just like the El Paso area, right?

I lived in Rochester for a couple years and flight instructed part-time as well. Patrick used to live there as well and took flight instruction with me at the school I used to teach at and at another school on the field as well.

What kind of job are you looking for. I really don't have an "in" up there anymore but I can at the very least give you the lay of the land.

As for places to live, it really depends on your budget and lifestyle preferences. I lived in Gates (nice, but older suburb) and also in the city next to the bar areas (fun, but sketchy). There are some really ritzy expensive areas further out like Penfield and Pittsfield and also some really eclectic neighborhoods in the city near Park Ave.

I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about the area - just bear in mind my info is 3 years old.

My daughter will be a freshman in HS, my son in middle school so we're looking for good schools not too far from the hospital.
I'd like to continue teaching. I may sell my Super D. depending on tail wheel/aerobatic training demand up there. I know here in El Paso the demand for that training is very low; I'm extremely busy with other instruction, however.

Man, good luck. I grew up in the area. When I got furloughed in March '09, I moved back and can't even find a decent part-time instructing job here, nevermind corporate or charter. ROC itself is a ghost town now (especially compared to what it used to be). Not much going on at all.

There are a few little airports around. Two that I am most familiar with are Williamson (KSDC) which is 25nm east and Canandaigua (D38) which is 25nm southeast.

Williamson has a club that runs the airport and does flight training for members, but no tailwheel or aerobatic. They don't have anything high performance, complex, or tailwheel. They do have decent airplanes though, and the best rates in the area. The airport is very nice, with lots of new hangars with what must be reasonable rates because they are quite full. I wouldn't be surprised if you could find some takers for aerobatic/tailwheel instruction there. The airport itself has three different maintenance shops, which keep fairly busy for a small airport.

I'm not as familiar with the Canandaigua scene, although there is a DPE with a couple of 172's there that at one time I was going to instruct in. He isn't really a school so you have to find your own students, he just lets a few freelance CFI's teach in his airplanes. Unfortunately, there are a few issues that have turned me off from really pursuing anything there.

As far as the area... I grew up out in the sticks, about 25 miles east of Rochester. I prefer it out there, but Ian mentioned some nice places to live closer to the city. How close does she want to live?

Climate? Well, I hope you like seasons. And by seasons, I mean you can literally have the weather from all four in a week this time of year. :insane:

Feel free to post any other questions and send me a PM when you get to the area. I'd be happy to help out any way that I can!

if you are living anywhere downtown then stay away from monroe ave. I would also suggest staying away from Greece area as it really has gone downhill. Irondequoit is nice because its off the lake and east rochester is ritzy (expensive) but has good schools. your best bet is to stay to the south or east of downtown. my g/f has an apartment just north of henreitta and its a pretty nice area. I don't know about the schools there though.

you might want to try batavia for giving instruction. its a small airport with a decent mx shop and they do instruction there. (its about a half hour to the west from roc by car).
