KPHX Terminal 3, which opened in 1979 and is completing a renovation, has been renamed the John S. McCain III terminal, honoring Arizona's senior senator. It joins Terminal 4, which opened in 1990, as a named terminal, with 4 being named for Barry M Goldwater, Arizona's former senior senator whom McCain replaced in 1986.
Terminal 2, which opened in 1962, remains as the oldest terminal at KPHX.
Terminal 1, which opened in 1952 (and had the original tower attached to it that is now at Cutter Aviation) and was demolished in 1991, is now a cellphone waiting lot and the west economy parking lot for the airport.
