Examples of Work:
Pilot state aircraft. Manage department youth programs. Will also prepare, when required, information for departmental publications, including a bi-monthly newsletter, aeronautical charts, airport directory and annual reports.
Qualifications / Requirements:
REQUIREMENTS: Must possess at least a current (FAA) commercial pilot certificate with instrument and multi-engine ratings. Must have minimum 2500 hrs total flight time PIC which includes minimum 1000 hrs multi-engine time PIC. Must also have current FAA Class II medical certificate. Must be available for flight assignments that include early morning, late evening, weekend and holidays. Also, a position may not be assigned all the duties listed, nor do the listed examples include all the duties that may be assigned. Position is based on 40 hr work week.
PREFERRED: King Air qualified. Similiar aircraft will be considered. Computer experience using desktop publishing software is desirable.

OTHER: Will be required to attend formal flight training annually, i.e. Flight Safety International, SIMCOM, etc

King Air EMS operators have starting pay ranging from 60-90K, with similar flight time requirements. Not sure if any are based in Lincoln.

Yeah, 40K is shockingly low for a government job, to boot.

No EMS Fixed wing jobs that I know of in Nebraska (or eastern part of the state), besides a Cessna 414 flying for a childrens hospital out of Omaha. The parent company is based in Ohio and they tried sticking a plane out here and started with a king air w/garretts, then down graded to the 414. They hired a local that I went to school with, and he's bailed from that job already so I'm guessing the pay wasn't all that hot.

Did it for the Napa Jet center (formally Brideford) for 2 years. No time off either. Well to be fair it was 45k or so. Even the D.O. called my pay embarrassing after I told him I could no longer afford to work and live in Napa on my pay.

It all depends. According to Bankrate.com's cost of living calculator, $40k in Lincoln will buy $70k worth of living in San Francisco, CA.

What a person really needs to ask is, "Do I want to live in Lincoln, NE or not?" Personally, I think it's a pretty awesome place, but I'm probably in the minority.

A "yes" or "no" answer will greatly influence the amount of money a person ought to be paid for this job.

The only reason I'm not applying is because I recently lined up a different job in Lincoln.

$70K sounds like a lot - especially when you're making less than $50K, but in San Francisco, it really doesn't go very far. It depends, I guess, on your standard of living. It's not uncommon to have to pay $1500 a month to live in the city with roommates. 70K in CA is, give or take a bit, around $4K a month take-home.

Sure, I'm not saying somebody will get rich on $40k/year, but if you can't live on that in Nebraska, you're doing something wrong. Maybe it's low pay for a King Air job, I don't know, but it's livable. And the comparison to SFO was just to answer the people saying cost of living doesn't make much of a difference. COL absolutely makes a difference....in this example, 70% worth.

Secondly: I can exceed all the mins but there is no way on God's green earth that I will handle youth programs for less than 80K per year. Nor would I fly the State's King Air for less than 65K. If they can pay other officials top dollar, they can pay their pilot's top dollar too.

I lived in Lincoln NE for close to 20 years. It stinks. The people their were as close minded as can be. If you are not from Lincoln originally AND share the same beliefs, do NOT try to set up shop in Lincoln NE.

WX in Lincoln: Summer 98 F with 100% humidity. It sticks to you like a wet blanket. Winter -10 F with wind chills in the -10-20 range. There is nothing between the north pole and Lincoln so the arctic express just rolls right the heck through their in the winter.
Cumulonimbus activity: High in spring and fall. TORNADOs are a common occurence in southeastern NE though Lincoln does sit in a bowl of sorts and is missed quite often.

A couple good lakes near Lincoln, Pawnee and Branched Oak lake are good summer spots...but again...ITS HOT HOT HOT and a BAD hot at that.

The pay is pretty insulting just for a King Air pilot... but then you are going to throw managing youth programs on top of that? Hell... I wouldn't take $40K to just do THAT. So... they want someone to fly their Beech AND manage a youth program for around half-ish what you should normally be paying someone to do either job?

I will agree with you about the pay being way too low and pretty much an insult. However, Lincoln was THAT bad and you stayed for 20 yrs??? The weather you described is pretty much standard for most of the fly-over states. Close minded people? Really? Nebraskans are some of the most welcoming people out there and in my experience, are very open minded to others as long as you don't throw your conflicting personal beliefs and whatnot in their face. Sorry you had a bad experience in the Good Life, but I beg to differ with your generalization of the area.

Didn't have a choice on staying as that was where I finished High School and college. As an outsider moving in there and trying to make it, I can only speak from my own personal experience. Lincoln blows. They once had a good college football team but even that now belongs to an era long gone.

However, mine is not the only experience. I know folks who love Lincoln, but most of them are from there or somewhere else within NE.
Someone will come along for them I am sure. Won't be me though. Fool me once shame on you...fool me twice...
