Kidney Stones

You are fortunate. Mine was immediate. Found this on a website about kidney stones:

You wouldn't want to be solo if that happened.
 
So basically, if you are white, have family history of kidney stones, eat alot Vitamin D, had urinary tract infection and/or taking HIV medication, you are more than likely to get kidney stones. Intresting...

Hopefully, I never get one or else many more will follow.

I feel you guys who have it. Its kind of scary imagining a grown man screaming in agony in the bathroom

It is also kind of scary for those 135 pilots who fly solo and had history of kidney stones. whoa!!

Well, to ease some of the terror of it a little bit, although not the pain, the pain does not come from where you think.

The pain comes from it moving from the kidney to the bladder. It is like someone sticking a knife in you. Once it passes into the bladder it is passed. I never felt it in my penis when I urinated it out. Most men thing the pain is in the penis. It isn't. Or at least wasn't for me.

Others may have pain in the penis when it passes through there or not. I didn't. But the bulk of the pain is it going from the kidney though that tube to the bladder.

Well, not trying to rain on your parade, but that sounds like an abberation to me. You have some pretty serious x-rays. But go ahead and put it in motion and see what happens. If you get through, then great.

But that comes with a warning. Just remember what it was like when you passed some of them and think of being in a plane alone if that happened. You would be taking that chance every time you were solo. Some common sense may outweigh your desire to fly. But probably not.

Yeah.. I plan on trying on getting my exams just to see what happens. The stones they found are really small, so they wouldn't be like the 11mm one that I had.. but I understand your warning, and worry about that myself. We will have to see what happens.
 
I went from the Urologist directly to my AME who deferred my medical at 5pm. That night I met with the regional deputly flight surgeon at 9pm. The next morning at 8am I had my medical. This was with the FAA knowing I had to existing stones that showed up on the IVP.

My urologist is very pilot friendly and helped out a lot. I have held a 1st class medical with no issues for the past 3 years. You will have to go through the FSDO flight surgeon, the AME cannot certify you on the spot. They will need a lot of paperwork. I was lucky I got mine so quickly.

There is a way to get it done though.
 
Just wanted to up date.. since the last time I poseted I got on the internet and started searching for some "miracle" cures for kidney stones.. and believe it or not I found some that actually work. I have passed about 5 small stones in the past week, and now I am on medications to prevent them from forming again. Hurray for non-conventional medical quacks!

You can definitely feel them that's for sure.. but it wasn't that bad. You would be surprised at the remedy that worked.. I got it off the net.. I drank 2 liters of coke in 2 hours, and right after I was done ate 10 ounces of pureed asparagus.. The whole time I was doing it I was like this is stupid, no ways it's going to work.. but I tell you what, it most certainly did. So for all you stone sufferers remember this for next time, no joke!
 
I hate to tell you this (and this is pretty quick- I didn't get a chance to read all the replies, so I don't know if you've already gotten all your answers)-- I flew with an AA 757 capt just the other day (he got back in a 172 w/ me as the instructor-- very cool)-- and he said he lost his medical two years ago due to kidneystones.-- maybe the severity/extent of his condition differs from yours though.

My mother said that it's worse than giving birth.

My girlfriends mom actually has a kidney stone right now and it's so big that she has to have a surgery to get it broken up.

They hurt like hell.

I just went and renewed my 1st class, and no problems. Even when I did the medical exam for American Eagle I had no issues when I reported having the stone. They said as long as the FAA knew about it, they had no problems.
