KIAH Ground Control

Still trying to reach the Top Shelf
Anyone work there or have a number for them?

Started to move the other day, the controller jumped my ass when I called for taxi. She said, "Aircraft calling for taxi you should be monitoring only". Then she went silent.

Now I'm sitting there wondering how in the heck she would know that I was ready to taxi if I didn't tell her.

I would like the number to call and discuss as I'll be in and out of there many time here in the near future.

Thank you

I know ramp control handles all the airline terminals, but dont remember them mentioning handling the cargo/transient ramps when I interviewed. I imagine that is where you were parked?

I remember from the airline side of things it was typically ramp, then clearance then monitor ground and wait for taxi instructions. I got chewed out by ground a few times for not monitoring and calling so you are not the only one. Does it say something on the ATIS maybe?

Never done this anywhere else I've ever flown but this is what I finally did. However, where was I supposed to pick up that tidbit of information?

I could be wrong, but my guess is that its on the ATIS. It's that way in ORD and at other airports that have a metering/clearance delivery before contacting ground.

My thought as well but the only thing out of the "norm" was that "United ramp procedures are in effect". However, if not in a United cockpit, it's a mystery...

IAH 7110.2B Local Operating Procedures said:
Section 3. GROUND METERING (GM)
8-300 DUTIES.
b. When pilots advise “ready to taxi” from a general aviation or cargo ramp area, inform the pilot to monitor the appropriate Ground Control frequency for taxi instructions and forward the flight progress strip to the appropriate Ground Control position (Appendix 2).

It should have been in the ATIS, about contacting ground metering before taxi. Same thing with ATL and quite a number of other busy airports.

I'm not sure what your situation or operation was specifically, but perhaps (as well all make mistakes), either it wasn't properly broadcast in the ATIS/D-ATIS, PDC (if received one) or it was overlooked on the part of the flight crew. Simple mistakes, any one of them, and certainly not worth being chastised over by ATC or anyone else.

Ish happens.

BTW, ground metering is not clearance delivery..., unless GM is combined to the CD position, which is like, pretty much never, except maybe on the mid... and even then GM would be combined to GC, then combined to LC.

Flightdata (FD) would also be combined up to LC. Probably 2 or 3 controllers on the mid, one of them being a SUP.
