KHQZ - Mesquite Metro Getting a Tower

I've been trying to find news info on this, but it appears that HQZ is getting a tower. They're also extending the runway to be 7,000 feet and putting in a restaurant. Kinda cool.

Heard about it from a CFI. There is a video all about the airport

It's mostly promo stuff, but at the end they mention the tower to be designed in 2007 (they already have funding and FAA approval, apparently) and built by 2008. Pretty cool.
 
You heard it here first - this is not going to sit well with the folks that live on the departure end of 18. HQZ is where I learned to fly (Born and raised in Mesquite) and people started complaining about the airport right after they built homes surrounding it.

On the plus side, it's a great field to fly into - not much Class B traffic to deal with.
 
hqz was getting pretty looney when i quit teaching there 6 months ago. whenever i go in now for cheap gas it seems more sane, but i go purposely at off-peak hours and never on weekends.

Interesting. The promo thing said they have zoning protections for noise abatement and stuff. And if they built homes around an airport that was there first...well...
