Keeping certificate number private?

Whenever I see somebody post a picture of their license they always have the cert. number blurred or covered. My question is why?

Maybe I'm not thinking outside the box enough but why should I care if anyone knows what my certificate number is?

What could you possibly do with that piece of information that would warrant taking the time to open photo shop or to pull out a pair of scissors and cut a piece of paper to block the #?

I'm serious. Thanks!

Some people never switched over from having their SSN as their number, and some people are just paranoid. I'm talking paranoid like cover up the camera on their work tablet because the company is spying paranoid.

If it's that much of an issue, I guess anyone who's given instruction is at risk of identity theft...I know my number is in at least 20 different people's logbooks. It could be paranoia, or it could just be that people are used to blocking out personal information, so they extend this to their certificate number out of habit even it it's not really necessary.

I'm curious too. The FAA uses your FTN number anyway.

The UAS certs having new numbers has thrown it a bit, but maybe it's just a way of knowing how longs it's been since you started flying?

Hiding your certificate number does a lot of good if you've been a mechanic or instructor.

Blurring that photo really helps when there are hundreds if not thousands of logbooks with your signature and certificate number floating around.

I started in 96, but mine is "354"—my cert # was my social for a decade.

So ... no.
