Justice Flight.

So as I we were taxing in on my commute home we past by the big Department of Justice terminal in OKC yesterday, and it got me thinking. I know next to nothing about that flying and would like to know more.

Who flies those 73s for prisoner transport? Are they Marshals or pilots or some conglomeration of the two? Is it a good job? You know, just basic stuff.

I figured we have a pretty diverse group of aviation professionals here...surely someone here knows something about it.

I don't know anything about the DOJ flying part....and don't call me "surely" (Shirley). They use to land about the same time we did during the week while I was flying TUL-OKC morning trips years ago. We'd watch them march the prisoners off the aft air stairs of their B727.

It's a government job and probably requires advancement from deep within the inside. Google JPATS and ConAir for more info.

I'm not positive on this one, but I think I have heard about supplemental 121s doing some prisoner flights. The details of the story are sketchy, but I am pretty sure someone was telling me they did those flights but we're not a DOJ employee.

I did DOJ flights in Hawaii under sup 121 rules. They were by far the nicest passengers we had. Other than that can't talk much more about it.

There's a thread in the jobs section that someone posted for jobs in OKC. There's some info on there about the company who is doing some Hawker flying for them. I don't remember off the top of my head who the company is, but they've been here for a while.

I couldn't tell you who flies them, but hose jets definitely used to be charter. Rumor is at OKC they go from airplane to prison. When I've seen those flights at Willow run they are usually surrounded by men with shotguns who aren't the friendliest people on earth, and busses with bars on the inside of the windows. Its actually mildly humorous when the plane taxiing in has the words fun jet scrawled across the fuselage

The two white ones from OKC were from Europe. I remember seeing them when I started here and they were a pile of crap. Now they look great. They are armed in OKC when the busses are on site. Then they go and load more over at the jail and I can only imagine that they are armed over there as well.

Very interesting. I sort of figured it would have been an internal job and not something contracted out. I always get a kick out of people when I jump seat home asking what's up with the white 737 sitting way over there at it's own little gate and terminal. oh that's a jail! Really? KOKC is a very interesting airport.

I flew a charter trip for them back in the summer of 2012 in a Lear 35. Back then I think they had a couple of Hawker 800s, and a few 737s. We flew a two day charter going around picking up and dropping off prisoners no more than three at a time, and had three marshals on board as well. It was a goat rodeo in OKC between the poor communication internally in my company and dealing with the marshals service, but once we got going it wasn't too bad.

They have a hangar on the east side of OKC and that jail/terminal thing on the west side.

I never figured why some boarded at the hangar and others got on at the jail. I guess the ones at the jail are the real nut jobs. OKC has 3 737s, 2 of their own Hawkers, and have/had a third Hawker on a temporary contract. As I was typing this one left the jail and departed.

MOST of the pilots are Gov employees. . They post occasionally on USAJob.gov but will only hire previous 73 experience (captains preferred). They do have other aircraft and hire those as needed. IIRC now you attend some limited LE classes but at one time were Marshalls; not sure if its the same now.....

I've heard/read that the DOJ (Justice call sign) are the flights that carry the criminals considered dangerous. RPN (RePatriate callsign) is for the flights that carry the illegal aliens back to Mexico and Central America countries.

I always just sort of figured of was a volume sort of deal. I'm sure they have the ability to handle a full 737 over at the jail. lol, better then just letting them out at the hanger.

I never liked going over there when their guests were loading. Something out fueling a plane while a guy stands behind me with a shotgun made me uncomfortable. I tried to get there early before the buses got in.

True statement......
