Hernias are not a big deal to repair these days. However, they do not heal on their own, and will require surgery!
Bill had one about 6 years ago. It was what is called an inguinal (pardon the slaughtering of the spelling..), non-strangulated hernia. That is, when he laid on his back the 'lump' went away, as did any discomfort. When he was on his feet, or carrying a heavy item, such as a kit bag, it pinched him and you could see a lump in the area.
One quick visit to the doc diagnosed it instantly, and surgery was scheduled without much delay, though it was certainly not emergency surgery. It was an outpatient procedure, and I took him home 3 hours after we walked in the office! The operation was 40 minutes total time.
What you must watch for is if the lump does not go away when you lay down, or if the area turns red/purple. If the area turns red, go an ER immediately. The hernia is strangulated and that means things in your guts aren't moving along as they should. This can be a very dangerous situation and will need to be attended to ASAP.
