Jumpseating on cargo carriers

I am a new dispatcher (currently in initial) for a major carrier that is in the CASS program and had a quick question regarding jumpseating on cargo carriers such as Fedex and UPS. Have any of you other dispatchers jumpseated on these carriers? If so, how do you find out their schedules, etc?

FedEx can be found here http://www2.alpa.org/fdx/jumpseat/ Call 866-357-5711 to list between 24 and 2 hours prior to travel

UPS can be found here http://tools.ipapilot.org/jumpseats/ Call 800-228-2739 (options 4:1) to reserve a jumpseat up to 10 days prior to travel.

I've been told FedEx doesn't take OAL dispatchers, but that may have changed.

UPS does take CASS jumpseaters, dispatchers included. I think FedEx still bases their bookings based on local time, where as UPS is all in Z time. Good luck,

I've also heard that FedEx doesn't allow their own dispatchers to jumpseat if it isn't a fam ride.

Every OAL dispatcher I've known who has been helped out by UPS has the best things to say.

I've got a question; I'm going to work for a cargo carrier who isn't in CASS (not all of their planes have cockpit door locks). Can I still jumpseat (not in cockpit, but hitch a ride) on a commercial carrier with permission from the captain?

I know some gate agents might be confused and expect to look me up in CASS before given permission to go down the jetway and ask the crew... just wondering if any dispatchers out there might have an answer. Thanks!

Thats not true Kev...FedEx does allow Dispatchers and Mechanics to personal jumpseat. However, the mechanics have to ride on a/c that have outside cockpit jumpseats only so basically all a/c except 727. Their policy is you have to have an FAA airman cert and you HAVE to be using it in the performance of your job. Do not know about OAL dispatch jumpers though. Will try to find out.

Fedex is all Z time as well

So does this mean a local A&P who owns his own shop could go jumpseat on FedEx?

Kewl, I just remember from my days working there Freebird being in local time, which caused lot of problems for our 0005lcl flight.. people showed up a day late. Granted this when every courier in the company could ride. I'd love to hear about the OAL DX status there.

Unless soemthing has changed, the CASS status isn't a requisite to have door locks. UPS does not have "cockpit doors" at all on most planes. There's some fees to pay and database management and stuff. I htink your carriers biggest problem would be offering recipricals, since I'm guessing you fly mostly int'l and CASS doesn't go there.

As far as non-cass jumpseating, you can ask for a "jumpseat" and go if you have space in the back. Getting past the gate agents can be the tough part. My last 2 dispatch jobs we were not CASS'd carriers but I managed to do a fair amount of jumpseating. Again, some carriers (and specific captains) are sticklers for the recip agreements and some gate agents get confused when the CASS doesn't work. Of course, the crew will often give that bewildering "dispatchers can jumpseat??? since when??" look... even when you're in CASS. I never had an issue with Delta, Airtran, or Frontier in my pre CASS days. Good luck!

Sure! As long as you are employed at FedEx AS a mechanic or in a position where your A@P is required. Would be nice to be able to take that jumpseat privilege on the road to other airlines like the pilots and dispatchers can.

The UPS jumpseat desk in Louisville is awesome they bend over backwards and the crews are the best they will introduce you to the folks flying the next leg and will get you all set for the cafe or tv room and the contractors at the out stations are very top notch also. I used UPS from mem to rsw almost all the time and I can not say enough good about them. one time they had to deadhead mx to rsw and the jumpseat res desk called and asked if i would mind going to mco as southwest had flights to rsw they even gave me a ride to the terminal.

So... let me get this straight about jumpseating. (I'm a prospective career changer) Let's say, for instance, I worked for SkyWest in St George, and wanted to maintain my home in Washington State (KPSC); could I ideally jumpseat my way back & forth (home & work)? Providing I found a flight from PSC to DEN to SGU, that is....?

Commuting as a dispatcher is rather difficult (and expensive, as you end up paying for a domicile in two locations.) SkyWest has a lot of good things to recommend it but ease of commuting in and out of SGU is not one of those things. But yes, if you could (theoretically) find flights in and out of SGU to PSC and back, it is possible. Just remember, jumpseating is space available and you're responsible for showing up on time for all your shifts...and it can eat up a lot of your days off travelling back and forth.

In theory, yes you can. A lot of variables. Flight availability, your schedule, etc etc. Here is a list of flts between SGU and PSC, so if your shift is done at midnight, you have lost 6 hours before the first flight out, and almost a half day is gone by the time you get home. Only you can decide if it is worth it.

Go to passrider.com and it will show you the flts between any city pair.

As mentioned, it is possible to commute, but it's a headache. I have and may again be a commuter soon, between two cities with non stop service 10 times a day. And there have been days I ended up renting a car and driving it. If you have some schedule flexibility and can find some one willing to do some creative swaps.. (a couple coworkers you to work 8 on 6 off schedules through trades) it can be aight. Not having a wife and kids makes it easier.

Commuting is definitely possible. I've been doing it for two years now and it's been rather easy because my carrier has plenty of daily flights to and from my city and the cities around. In addition, being in CASS now is going to make life much easier.

FedEx does NOT allow Dispatchers to jumpseat. I called last week to try and book a flight and they said to me even though Im in CASS and my airline have a reciprocal agreement dispatchers were no longer allowed. UPS said to me of course I can fly on them but we could find a recip agreement for my airline so I was out of luck.

So that clears that up.. FX DOES allow their own dispatchers to jumpseat AND FX dispatchers CAN jumpseat on other carriers which I do not agree with. If its not reciprocal it should not be allowed.

But FDX dispatchers are NOT in CASS...however, FDX dispatchers can and there are some that do commute - but they commute on line for the most part...
