Jumpseat etiquette question...

I ask for your help because I'm a fish out of water when it comes to these things.

I jumpseated back to the bay area for the weekend and need to get back to Juneau for Saturday. The flights aren't full, but they're a bit tight. I know that buying a ticket on a flight and then canceling it to jumpseat is bad... and that makes perfect sense. But what about buying a refundable ticket on a later (but same night) flight as a backup? I can't not be back at work, of course, and I have no problem paying for a ticket if I need to... but if I can save $600 (SEA-JNU) without doing anything wrong, it'd be nice.

And by the way, if that question is impolitic for some reason, please don't get angry and assume that I'm trying to get around anything—It's merely ignorance of proper procedure, not an attempt to abuse the system in any way.

If I'm supposed to buy a ticket, I'll buy a ticket.

Thanks in advance!

Buying a ticket (and taking away a potential revenue seat) and even thinking that you might not need it is bad mojo. Trust the jumpseat system (and give yourself a ton of options) or just buy a ticket and use it, and don't worry about whether there will be empty seats for you or not.

Got it. That's all I needed to know on the subject. Thanks!

Unfortunately, there's (currently) only one option that I know of to get to Juneau, so it's a little stressful.

or just buy a ticket and use it

That may be what I end up doing.

Thanks!

But I doubt they take us lowly 135 guys. :(
I actually heard that my carrier has something in the works with them, that a couple guys from Down There did at least one ride along with us to GST as part of it. But that might just be "I heard it from a CP" rumor.

Ooooh. Interesting. I think I am going to be our new JSC, so I may have to try.

But think of all the local knowledge they could learn on the way up.

It was worth a shot. You gotta go for that while @Seggy is too busy vacuuming.
Oh geez, you tagged him, now we get to hear all about how flying a twin turboprop with a copilot in a part of the world rife with ILSs is basically the same thing as flying a piston single VFR to airports with no approaches.

On the plus side, he's probably changed batteries in a flashlight before so in sure he's qualified to point out the error of my ways in the maddening stray electron problem I'm troubleshooting in an EFIS at work.

You coulda just laughed at my joke. You brought it upon yourself. :)

I'm a little confused. How is it losing revenue if you've already bought the ticket and don't show up? They still get paid regardless.

It is very bad mojo....When I was at NWA they were very clear that if you bought a ticket in the event a non-rev seat wasnt available, and then took the NR seat and refunded it, you would lose your privileges with cat like quickness.

And by the way, when I think about it during the day, it's less obvious why that seemed like it might be a reasonable thing to do... just was thinking it might be what commuters do for backup.

Like I said, I just want to reemphasize that the last thing I want to do is anything wrong, impolitic, bad or selfish... but jumpseating seems to be something that everyone eligible is expected to know all about, and I'm sitting here in Seatac between legs and still mostly ignorant of the proper procedures, etiquette, policies and morals involved. ^.^

Thanks much for the guidance, everyone.
