Jet type rating time VS. PIC time

I recently got a slot to train to be a second officer this May. Ive been getting bad raps from the guys I fly with in my local FBO...calling me a sellout (jokingly). What is more important between the two? Ive been looking around foreign major carriers and the time requirements isnt much on PIC but equipment. Is it the same here? The way the trend is in terms of hiring...which is the best way to go?...Im only doing the second officer route in order to get the type rating faster...is this better or should I teach and go regionals? Someday i want to go back here in the US to fly for the majors here...im only going foreign as a stepping stone...will this be an advantage for me?..
 
Again, unless an airline specifically requires you to have a type rating, having one without significant time in type doesn't do a whole lot for you.

Does the airline you've been offered FE training hire PFE's or are you able to bid FO when seniority allows?

there are no FE's second officer is like a first officer but you cant touch controls below 10000 feet and no landing and takeoffs. Upgrade to first officer takes about a year...usually to a A320 or 737. What im wondering is..if ever I do get those FO type rating is will it be good here?
 
Oh, a IRP (international relief pilot) or a CP (cruise pilot).

Now are you confusing an actual type rating to IRP/CP training? I'm not sure why they're type-rate you on an aircraft and then have you fly as a IRP/CP because it'd be a waste of time.
 
The actual type rating is after a year when you upgrade to first officer of a smaller plane like a 320 or 737. Thats why im all confused...ill be type rated yet PIC will be low...will that be useful here?
 
Even with a type, unless you're acting as PIC you legally cannot log PIC.

Dude, go fly. Seriously.
 
is this with Cathy Pacific by any chance? And don't most countries require a type rating for any pilot, pic, sic or otherwise?

I get it now....so it means Im type rated yet I cant log it until I become a Captain for them...so its like a trap so I'd stay with them for like 10 yrs...Now its clear...so it would only be a good idea if i dont plan on coming back here. Also when I said low PIC it meant flying soloes on cessnas and seminoles...not even the jet. So my experience with them will only be useful here once I start logging PIC time on the particualr type...which is probably 10-15 yrs from now...yikes. Taking your answer into consideration...very much appreciated!
 
What do you want to do and where?

That's really the important question.
 
My ultimate goal is to fly for southwest or Jetblue...basically thats it...I want to retire here in the US.
 
I so want to be a smartass right now....But

I think there is a movement going on about requiring both CA and FO to be typed int eh aircraft for international operations. The FO type will be basically the same thing they do now to get certified for 121 ops, but they will hold a SIC Type, or some BS like that.
 
FO's and IRP's are a little different.

Some airlines have type rated CA's (obviously) and type-rated FO's for international ops, but the IRP/cruise pilot generally does a non-type rated quickie course.

I thought I uhh, already said that.
