Looks like the colgan rumor that we are getting ipads, could come true!

Jet charter to use Jeppesen iPad app in lieu of paper charts

By AOPA ePublishing staff

The FAA has authorized Executive Jet Management, a subsidiary of NetJets Inc., to use the Jeppesen Mobile TC App for the iPad as an alternative to paper aeronautical charts, Jeppesen announced Feb. 11.

The charter company and Jeppesen managed a three-month in-flight evaluation before the authorization, with regular engagement from the FAA, Jeppesen said. It added that “[l]essons learned, processes established, and templates developed” during the evaluation and authorization may benefit other companies seeking a similar authorization for use of the iPad.

How are they going to prevent flight crew from using the iPad for non EFB functions. Is apple aiding them in modifying iOS?

I wouldn't think it would be too hard. First don't issue them to each crew member. Just issue two per airplane. Second, delete all other applications, apps, etc.

Whose going to pay to charge them? Will the company add outlets in the crew room for us to leave them? Will they pay me an extra $10 a month to charge? What if they go with plane iPads instead of personal, who takes them out to charge?

I'm thinking about the Saab side that has no way of powering these from inside. I personally like my paper plates. I don't know how in the Saab you would place these in front of you for quick reference.

Screw paper, unless it's ship sets. I don't know how many airports you have to carry charts for on the Saab, but I've got 2 2" Jepp binders and 1 1" binder full of LIDO charts....and they keep giving us more. At least we don't have to carry en route charts, too. I'd ditch them in a heartbeat if I could. My back would thank me immediately.

I imagine there can be a modifcation to the flight deck to provide power for the iPads as is the case in most airplane-issued EFBs. Will be able to charge your iphone while flying!

These will not be "hardwired" into the aircraft. There will simply be a holder to put it (where the chart clip currently is). There will also be a required backup power source, which will be a battery pack with a power cord, so the thing won't go dead when you forgot to charge it in the hotel... or played angry birds on your "airport appreciation" sit.

I have been in Memphis the past week and was told we are getting PDA's. I wonder if that is what turned into an iPad rumor.

The saab has 115 volt ac systems, and comes with a factory option for power ports - normally to run cleaning equipment in the back if needed. They can with relative ease, add a power port. All you really need is a 5 volt 1/10amp power supply for the ipad.

Honestly, I doubt that they will get us all IPADS, but It would be nice if it was an approved means for charts/ manuals... If I could select between receiving the paper version, or company paid digital, i'd be happy enough.

Colgan as i heard, signed a long term deal with jep, part of which included the direct distribution we have now... So honestly, I wouldn't expect anything for a long time :)

Nothing has been made official. The rumor has been running since the iPad was first announced by Apple.

I would almost rather "buy" my own ipad... but at the same time, loath the idea of "buying" something for work.

If you own the ipad, you can use it as you want, and the company really can't say do/don't with it. You don't have to worry about a Facebook post made on it, as it's yours. I would, cautiously, say that If it were an option to use, but not provided... I would prob. go that route and sell the flight case :).. but I want to be able to use it for my own needs when I'm not flying.
