Hey Doug, how about a JC pilot shop?

Could work for you Doug. Neil over at pilotmall.com gets a ton of business through his studentpilot.com site. If you could offer cutthroat prices on products that up and coming students would need, you could make a killing on sheer volume. And you've already got all the skills you need to go and make the killer web page to sell the products.

About that second profession...

I just need the product.

eCommerce kind of baffles me. Am I just a middle man to the supplier, or do I keep hoardes of pilot junk piled up in my office?

You should do it. It would also bring more recognition to jc.

Well the key is to get right to the manufacturer and then ask about volume discounts. You have to cut out every in between person. That's how I get stuff for cheap for my biz's, you just have to say "What price can I get if I want 20 of these" etc.

I would say setup a warehouse, tie in the online system to your computerized stock system so you can go from ordering stuff online to shipping out of your warehouse. You pay local kids $7.00 an hour to take the requests off the web site, grab the product, pack it, and ship it out. Real easy job. The problem is that you need a decent amount of space and a lot of capital to start out with to purchase all those products and the space that you'll put it in. This makes you a middle man.

Can you tell I worked pickup at Toys-R-Us for a summer? That's all I did for a summer. Get a request for something, grab it, throw it in a car. Go back, do it again. Easy job, crappy pay though.

I think you should partner with a supplier. Let someone do the expensive warehousing, shipping, storage, billing, and so on.

You just deliver the customers to them and take a cut of any sales.

What if you re-sale it from another online store? You can make a deal with another online sotre where you can buy products for cheaper and re-sale it for a higher price. The problem is finding the online store to partner with, and re-selling it with a price low enough that people will buy. Why don't you ask someone who does it, how it works? email Neil or something. I suggested the idea but I am not saying you are to do all the work. I think we can help you out if enough people supports the idea. I can't speak for everyone anyone byt myself though.

I think you would be best to contact
David Clark/Cencal/Lightspeed/Jeppesen directly rather than go through another shop that way it would prevent too many middlemen from gettin involved.

And do you really expect us to believe that you don't already have hoardes of pilot junk piled up in there?

How about an "auction" type site that we can post and sell stuff we no longer use? Kind of like an Ebay for the aviation world! I would much rather buy something from another pilot that could use the cash than line the pockets of another pilot shop owner.

Shoot, as far as that goes, there could be a "For Sale" thread right here on JC. That way Doug wouldn't have to do any extra work, as he is in such high demand!

That seems like a great idea. But do people really have that much pilot supplies to sell in these forums? Doug has advertisiment in this website for a way to keep the site. Maybe the shop would allow some extra features and Doug could get something back for running jc.

You should sell Coatimundis* ...

*Lame reference to a thread I posted a couple weeks back. F***in raccoons.

So is it possible or is it an idea we should let get buried with the old posts?

Yeah, the auction died a quick death.

Lots of bandwidth, very few active auctions and didn't generate a single cent for the website.
