Jacksonville Area Flight Schools/FBO's

I have a friend who lives/works in Jacksonville and is interested in getting her PPL for fun. She asked me where she should go but I'm not familiar with any places up there that would be a good fit.

Any suggestions?

Depends upon what part of town you are in.

Craig Field in Arlington is a good place, where North Florida Flight Training and Sterling offer part 61. Delta Connection Academy and ATP are also on field.

Cecil Field to the west offers some flight training through their FBO, I believe through Florida Community (former FCCJ)

Herlong has a few flight schools, never flown in there.

And there are also flight schools in St. Augustine, Brunswick, and the surrounding areas, but for the metropolitan area in Jacksonville, I recommend flight training out of Craig.

Just my .02

Sterling has a good reputation, and is a 141 school actually.

DCA, well that's my school & I would reccommend staying away. The satellite base has gone downhill as of late, and that's all I have to say about that lol.

North Florida is decent, but it's not the greatest. I won't say much more than that because it's purely heresay.

ATP is on the field as well like the previous poster mentioned. I'll leave that up to you...

Could always try Herlong if she lives on the west side.

i got my ppl and inst. at sterling. good outfit, high dollar.

i rented about 20 hours from north florida, even higher...

call joel weaner, he's an excellent cfi with 8000+ hours. He has a great 172, teaches out of craig field, and will save your friend a good deal of money.

Wow I was one of Joel Weaner's students back in 2003-2004. Got my private in n7159q. What is he up to these days? He is probably a lot cheaper than the other places on the field too.

A propos to nothing, and totally unhelpful. But I got a kick the other night flying in to JAX when a Seminole of some description (think maybe DCI) checked on with the tower and requested a stop and go.

Tower guy: Seminole such and such, did you make that request with Radar? (dating himself, here, crusty old bastich)

Seminole Such and Such: Uhhhhhhh...no they didn't ask

Tower guy: Well why are you keeping it a secret?

Maybe you had to be there.

I did my training at Craig when I was at JU/Comair Aviation (dating myself, a little). I never had any issues with Craig Tower, and I loved going over to Cecil to practice short field landings with the carrier markings.

Jacksonville is a pretty good area for training, not as crowded as the Orlando area.
