I've wondered....

I\'ve wondered....

How does it feel the first time you fly to higher altitudes? (e.g. 18000+ ft. while)

It must be a very cool feeling no? Like something new in flying.
Anyone care to comment how your first time was?

(And no I don't mean as a passenger

Re: I\'ve wondered....

I think the cool part is the plane you will be flying not the altitude - if you are in a Turbo 182 feeding O2 I doubt it will be that cool, if it is in a new CRJ with fancy tubes, and you are working of Machs instead of kts, a smoking hot FA, then it would be cool!

Re: I\'ve wondered....

First time I went above 12,500, I thought "Holy Cow!" and then ever after that day, it was a complete non-event.

The view from 37,000 is a lot like the view from 10,000 feet, only hazier.

Re: I\'ve wondered....

Do you guys ever miss the view from 5,000 feet? I really enjoy the view down low a lot more than I like it from the flight levels, but maybe that's because I don't get to see it from the cockpit, just from the window, with the exception of the flights I took on ANA where you got to see the view from the cockpit.

Re: I\'ve wondered....

That's what I was wondering Tony. I was flying around MT last week, ( I had a blast at home. I rented a 64' C182 and a 67' C172 with a 180hp and constant speed prop. I also flew in my buddy's 57' C170). I was thinking about what it would be like to fly and have all that equipment that tells you everything about your flight. I was flying low down near BZN and the VOR in this plane wasn't recieving unless I was within 20NM of the station. As a result I was doing the ol' pilotage approach by constantly referencing my sectional. It was really fun. But I kept thinking about fly for a job and how i don't want to give up my mountain flying.

Re: I\'ve wondered....

I've got a few hours up in the FLs and while it is interesting, once you are up there the view is about that same as 10,000. What was fun was taking the PA44 up to 13,000. The moment the altimeter ticks through 12,500 you start watching the clock for the 30 min mark and checking your finger tips to see if they are turning blue. Fun Fun.

Re: I\'ve wondered....

I was on a flight back from exciting North Dakota in a 210. We ended up climbing to 18,000. It was crazy that we were that high. I just remember it being cold and I had to put on an oxygen mask because I started feeling weird. The pilot seemed to be fine. The view sucked though. I like it much better down lower.

Oh yes!

The problem is that most airports I operate in and out of are so busy that you're getting 5 degree vectors, 10 knot speed changesa and there's little room for any spontaneity. It's very much like having to wear a white shirt and a black tie every day and once every six months you have Hawaiian shirt day!

Re: I\'ve wondered....

I'm stuck in Redmond Oregon right now on mechanical but last night flying up from SFO we were up at FL260 and me and the captain were talking about how it just blows our minds that were up here with this plane at this altitude. Pretty cool!

Re: I\'ve wondered....

My favorite cross-country altitude is about 250' AGL with the side window open.

Re: I\'ve wondered....

Listening to Daf talk in Las Vegas, I'm thinking about how cool it would be to flight nap of the earth at 400kts blowing "stuff" up!

For me, it's either real low or real high.

Seaplane flying is so much fun though, for that reason. You get to come in low over the trees to land in the lake and all. Real cool

The moment I got to 12,500 I told the jumpers to get out!!

A normal C-182 will barely climb at that altitude with a full load. I don't know if I was imagining it, but after a busy day with lots of loads, I would get a headache.

I liked the view from 500 AGL much better!

Re: I\'ve wondered....

I think my favorite altitude is about 3500' for any XC... don't know why, just like it.

Was at 14,500 for a load of jumpers in a king air the other day (I got a ride along, not PIC

) and I didn't notice too much hypoxic wise, of course we were only there for a minute then the next minute we were in the pattern...

MAN those things can get down...

we were on the ramp and shut down in time to see the last 3 tandoms come in!

Re: I\'ve wondered....

I like flying at exactly 5,280 feet. Now if I can find someone who wants to go up with me when I fly at that altitude!
