Is TCAS MEL'd

Just out of curiousity for the 121 guys, if your TCAS is inop, does your MEL allow you to still fly?

MEL BOOK said:
(M/FC) (O) May be inoperative provided:
a. System is deactivated and secured, and
b. Enroute or approach procedures do not require its use.

That said there are a few airports I won't fly into with out it.

The way ours reads is it's MEL-able on one side. That side can't be the PF. I'm sure once we have both sides go out or some BS like that it'll get changed.

An uncontrolled place like PGV on a weekend or a place like LGA?

I'd go into New York no problem. No way in hell am I going into a place like PGV with out it.

Really? We have separate MEL's for it breaking on one side and then the whole thing breaking. It's straight out of the Bombardier book so I'm surprised you guys don't have it as well.

I looked in our MEL, and I didn't see it. That doesn't mean it's not there. :) I've never had to deal with TCAS being totally deferred, just on one side.

Gotcha, I always select below mode, and keep my head on a swivel going into PGV. Sometimes they got little cubs flying around that I doubt even are mode c capable:(, not to open that can of worms again.
I personally don't think any 121 operations should be allowed at an uncontrolled airport... That may be a controversial statement, but I still think it.

At at least one other CRJ operator, there's MEL's for the display on one side being inop and one for the whole thing...the deferral expires quicker if the whole system is done. (If it's there, it will be right above the TCAS display MEL's).

We can fly with it deferred on the Brasilia, though it does not happen all that often. That said I REALLY hate flying without it.

right, and I'd rather go into LAX or SFO rather than SGU or SBP without it.

Ain't that the truth...
Watch your back in those places, real spotty radar coverage between SMX and SBP and around SGU! At least up in ACV and CEC there are fewer planes...

Cheers
George

Righto George... As I considered my response I thought of ACV and CEC and even RDM and OTH, but there is alot less traffic in those locations, AND the wx is generally below mins anyway :pirate:

Eh, that doesn't stop people some times. I was going into PGV once on the ILS. It was something like 400 overcast and just as we broke out, my FO starts screaming "go around... go around". Turns out there was a Cessna parked on the runway doing a runup. We'd been making radio calls inbound (on the correct freq... I've made that mistake before) for the last 5 minutes and this guy had never said anything.

Who does a runup ON the runway?
