Is IBS disqualifying

Hey Doc, I have been having some stomach issues as of late. I am worried I may have IBS. Is that automatically disqualifying for a first class medical?

Are you sure it's IBS? Have you been diagnosed with it? I thought I had IBS beginning about 5 years ago, turns out I just have a lactose sensitivity. (Which I willfully ignore, cause man I love cheese and sour cream!)

This. Try going without dairy for a few days and see how you feel. You might just be sensitive to lactose.

Thanks guys, I have not been diagnosed with it, but was just wondering. I am trying to self cure myself, by keeping a diet diary, and reduce stress by exercise. If my problem persists I will go to a gastero. I have just had some stomach issues as of late, actually didn't fly because of it yesterday, but hopefully they wll go away!

This. Try going without dairy for a few days and see how you feel. You might just be sensitive to lactose.

Definitely avoid dairy for awhile and see what happens. As we age some of use lose the ability to break down the lactose.

If its not dairy, try avoiding High Fructose Corn Syrup and see if its that. Some people have trouble breaking it down and causes symptoms similar to IBS. Its really easy to consume too much of it when you get pop for free at work.

Thought I had IBS. Turned out to be full blown UC. Kept it under control with medication, no issues for medical just had to update during physicals. Got outta hand eventually though and ended up getting my colon removed. Didn't fly about a year during the ordeal but healed up, off meds, symptom free and fly for an airline. IBS is a condition that currently requires a Special Issuance. Later this year, they will be making it one of the Conditions AME's Can Issue (CACI) with speciifc criteria set forth to allow this. The criteria are not yet published at least require a report from the treating physicina stating what the condition is, the treatment, that it is stable and no change in treatment is planned.
