iPad + Stratus 2 v. Aera 560

EIR

It's 5 o'clock somewhere
I'm going back to single pilot ops again and am looking for some advice.

Previously I used my 560 w/ XM and my iPad for charts. However, it's been over two years since I used that combo, and the iPads / ADS-B technology has advanced so much, I thought about picking up an iPad mini + Stratus 2 or Gen 4 iPad + Stratus 2.

I really like the no subscription with iPad + Stratus combo.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Stratus 1 is cheaper unless you really need that AHRS.....or the internal fan of Stratus 2

Looking at grabbing one for my iPad2 foreflight combo now

Gosh I wish I had the choice, I use a mapless GPS, we have no ground or airbone WX radar, maps are older then I am....

I don't need the 2, however, the fan will help considering 60% of the flying is in TX.

After researching it most of the day, I've decided on the Mini 3G 16gig + Stratus 2.

I have a "friend" who has the stratus 1 and is nothing but satisfied. Says the only problem he has is getting the device to find GPS satellites (no problem receiving ADS-B WX) but that's more of an aircraft limitation than a device problem. Much better than paying for XM and viewing it on a small portable gps screen.

My "friend" also says to check eBay as there are lots of good deals to be had on the original stratus units.

This post brought to you by beta from my iPhone.

I run a 32, but only load Midwest (Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Kentucky, Iowa, Pennsylvania and Ohio) as well as Florida, California and international (the later as it interfaces with the sim as well) and its uses 4.5GB

They say you should get at least a 32gb, since Foreflight will eat up most of the 16.

I have 5.7 gigs left on my 16 gig with everything downloaded on foreflight (minus the georeference and terrain). I might go with the 32gig so I don't have to watch what I download and I can use it for other than aviation.

I'm not really thrilled with Stratus 1. Main reason I bought it was for winter flying and to get runway contamination (NOTAMs) en route. My device receives everything buy NOTAMs! Yes, it's placed towards the Southern sky. I used it the other day for the first time in a few months and it just didn't do it for me. That being said, I am flying an airplane with XM Satellite Weather. To each his own.
