iPad Question

Looking to Ride-Along
Planning on attending in July 2013, but was thinking about buying myself the 'required' iPad as a X-Mas gift for myself...
The question is, how much room does ALL of the courseware actually take up? I know they recommend the 32, but is that because it fills it, or will I still have enough room for a bunch of music/videos/etc.

Thanks in advance for the help

The ATP app is currently sitting at 2.3 GB used on my iPad (haven't bothered to delete it even though I finished months ago at ATP). Foreflight right now is showing 3.1 GB used.

I personally went with the 64 simply because I knew that I could use that much space just using about half of what I have in iTunes on my desktop. I can't remember getting over 24 GB used that often when flying from home as I am pretty good about managing my iPad and only putting on it things I intend to use in the near future. Still, I've gone on a few trips where it was sitting around 50 GB used with lots of entertainment loaded.

Is having 3G absolutely necessary for the training? Or could you get by with just WIFI?

I say get the 3g version but just dont pay for service. the GPS is just as good as a bad elf, but if in the future the OP wants 3g service, all he has to do is pay for it!

elmetal...I def. thought about that, but here's what I'm thinking. I think I'm gonna go iPad mini, I like the way it feels in hand (TWSS), I've heard it fits better in cockpit, and last but not least...I plan on making an in-dash mount and using it as my in car media. (if you want to see a video what I mean, I'll post it)

I fully plan on buying an external GPS (probably the dual one b/c of bluetooth). And as for the 3G, my phone supports wifi tethering with no contract so there's my mobile internet.

I'd really like to go the 32GB+Wifi route, but if there's simply not going to be enough room for a bunch of music, some videos/movies...then I'd want to go 64GB

I started the ASU/ATP program last August and got the 32 WiFi. Once I moved up to iTunes Match all my music got moved to the cloud and I have over 20GB empty space in my iPad. I got the Bad Elf from eBay for 75 bucks and it works just as well. The updates you want to get in ForeFlight, you could get it from your iPhone version of ForeFlight if you have one. Waiting for the iOS 6.0.1 jailbreak so I can have tethering as well. But so far I didn't need data connection to my iPad.

Nice TWSS drop... I can see how the mini would be good for flying, but is the screen large enough for studying the material since all the books are now apps at ATP?

Hey, just an update: I bought the mini over Xmas, and, I have to say I love it. I'm using it for 2 textbooks and plenty of PDF's for my college, and overall it's exactly what I hoped it would be. I would highly recommend one based on my experience with it. I can't wait to use it in the cockpit.
